I would suggest you have a look at the service road at the side of the A532, http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?x=37 ... 54612&lm=0
I have parked here several times, it does get full later in the morning but there there should be room, or in the side roads off there as well. I will be parking there myself this Saturday at 7.45am.

Crewe station car park is only £2 all day Sat & Sun, usually plenty of room.

    Several things I've found,
From the Independent...Virgin stations such as Warrington and Crewe where the price of car parking has just shot up from £4 to £5 a day
    Strange, as Warrington charge £6.
    Crewe Chronicle... http://www.crewechronicle.co.uk/crewe-n ... _page.html

Those days have gone. It went down to £2 [Sat & Sun] in April when Virgin Trains took over the running of the car park from a private operator.

Thanks all, really appreciate it - this sort of help reminds me why I plough through all the petty rubbish on here.

Think for the sake of 2 quid probably go for the station car park - why is it £2 when Lancaster is still a fiver??

Now fingers crossed for a couple of wet days between now and then to avoid any danger of dry call off - oh and Mr Meanley if you are reading this my dad has everything crossed for a good performance, I hope that the coal is being picked on a lump by lump basis!!

    Cheers again!

It is definetly not £2,unless it has gone down in recent weeks? We have always paid 6 quid,we are talking about the VT one right?

I paid £2 when we went on the Run to Festiniog in April.

Castle over Shap, A4 (or A1) over the Devon Banks, 6233 over Stoke - great. A bit of variety is welcome as is 'right engine over the right route' policy. Both have their place.

In this post my reference to "The Welsh Highlander" should read RTC's "Welsh Mountaineer". Apologies for any confusion.

SaltyDog, if you watch this YouTube of 46115 at Shap Summit with Great Britain 2 (pulling 11), I think you'll agree that was faster than 33 mph, closer to 40 I'd think.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDRDp_kM ... re=related

I thought myself the Guardsman wasn't worked as hard on the Scot over Shap run. The owners should write the names of the GB2 footplate crew in big red letters on their wall, and insist on using them every time.

I'll be watching 5043's load and speeds with a sceptical eye, I must say.

I think on the GB2 that Gaurdsman topped the summit at 55 from what I read in Steam Railway. Sorry I haven't got the copy to hand at the moment to confirm that :-k

55, wow! Wasn't that an amazing performance from a 7P? So we'd be looking for the Castle to pass the summit doing over 30 in a monsoon and over 50 in mild dry weather to be considered competitive. I half-recall that 71000's best time from bottom to top was 7 min and something, what was the something?

The measured distance as I understand it is from post 31.5 to 37.25 and I think that the record for that distance is 5mis 31 secs by Sutherland on load 11/430 tons.71000 is only 1 second slower but with 13/510. I do not have the full details of the Scot run but I believe that the time was about 5:55 and the speed was roughly 44mph at the summit. This just shows how good the Scot is for a class 7.Although the Castle is a fit engine I would be very suprised if it gets anywhere near this sort of time.Time will tell.

While it'll be interesting to compare times over Shap, it'll also be interesting to view the combined time for Grayrigg and Shap. We know that the Castles cope well with the short sharp pulls of the Devon Banks, but where they often seem to be less than impressive (at least in preservation) is on the long slogs like over on the S&C. While Shap is not dissimilar to the Devon Banks, it is preceded by a fairly long slog up Grayrigg, followed by limited recovery time through the Lune Gorge. My guess is that if the Castle takes it easy up Grayrigg, then it might have enough left to have a good go at Shap, but if it hammers up Grayrigg, then I'm not sure that the run through the Lune Gorge would be long enough to prepare for Shap. This is pure speculation on my part, but it'll be interesting to see what happens on the day.
