As it was a WCRC gig don't fear there will be posters reviewing the entire operation for any shortcomings to be debated on here at length later! I am not sure what triggers the timings that are included on RTT but I suspect the train stopped short of whatever records arrivals and departures at Holgate and thus the time recorded was when FS passed having already taken over.... or it was all Edward Thompsons fault!

According to Opentraintimes it arrived at Holgate at 1122 and left at 1200.

For anyone who may be interested "Scotsman" (it was hardly flying) left York five minutes late.

A police helicopter checked the line both ways, police motorcyclists were all over the bridges and Network Rail "Rapid Response" vans were backwards and forwards..................un frigging believable!

ps. The news blackout was a total failure, lots of people around.

pps. I still think the blinkers look crap! :)

But didn't we always know it would be like that.
I hope they take the blinkers off when it visits heritage lines but they are necessary on the mainline. I remember first seeing them as a kid at the Cross and didn't like them then.

Going back to the actual run today , I'm sure those on board have noticed the lack of a box on the back, hopefully the other trips continue like this!

Common sense tells me that the more one tries to regulate this sort of behaviour by draconian restrictions, the less likely people are to take responsibility for their own welfare, and the more likely it is that an accident will eventually happen.

I don't disagree with you to be honest, but not sure what one is supposed to do, I know its not what people want to hear but as events with WCRC have shown, rightly or wrongly on the modern railway risk assessment and paperwork is king and they will be desperately trying to risk assess/manage out of this situation. There is no easy solution but equally putting ones fingers in ears isn't going to help and sadly mainline steam is on somewhat thin ice at the moment what with safety concerns with the principal operator and mass trespass.

One question: the people who went on the lineside - do you think *they* thought it was dangerous? They were happy with their welfare. Therefore they won't change their actions. The video with the BTP spokesman saying "stay safe" or whatever will have no effect on them, as they think they *are* safe. Either you have to stop them going there (not enough people to do that) or you reduce the chance of them going (by not promoting the times).

And there you have it because the truth is that their perception is correct and most of them were completely safe providing that they stayed a few feet from the tracks. Certainly they were considerably safer than, for example, walking along a country A-road.

Or don't run it at all.
Running the flying secret runs the risk of someone somewhere on the planet eventually getting hurt by this machine.

All these Alarmistas, Doommongers, eventually they know they will be right, as even the IRA said, "they only need to be right once".
Statistically it will eventually happen, odds are, no matter what you do, nothing will ultimately prevent it, as humans are human.

It may be that an asteroid lands on the boiler, snakes in the water tank or even a mouse gives someone a fright.

Until then, I won't need a risk assessment to goto my car each morning, even though odds are something happening on the road is far higher than Scotsman.

So 60103 did the trip uneventfully it seems apart from extended delays arriving at Newcastle and at York on the return. Hopefully someone on the train will have a report for us in due course.

For a "secret" train, there were a lot of people on Northallerton Station - complete with BTP and Network Rail track workers keeping an eye. A late running TPE service managed to block a number of well set up shots (much rushing alomng the platform to where those of us who worked out what might happen were!), and the approach was leisurely due to the switch to the slow line at the south end of the platform, but 2 memories remain with me:
    1. The 2 young ladies who must have been so caught up in the moment (or maybe their mobile communication devices ) that by the time they realised that the Newcastle bound TPE service was in the platform, the Conductor had locked the doors and was preparing to depart!
    2. The young lad who greeted me as I walked through the subway with "I have seen a steam train". He seemed less than impressed when I told him it was Flying Scotsman but the joy at what he had seen was evident.
