Day 7 left me wondering why someone in NR chose to wait until late on Tuesday to declare steam through Sunderland a 'no go' area for Wednesday even after the day had been given a path. More to the point, when the trip was planned back in the mists of time and the route agreed, why was nothing said then? Does this all sound familiar? Is it all getting rather silly? Are people wasting their money? Answers please on a piece of toilet paper so that it can be disposed of appropriately after use.

Yes, we did get an A4 out of Stanhope and UoSA really did boldly go where no A4 has gone before. There were even a few bedraggled photographers who managed to capture the scene in the worst that Weardale could provide weatherwise. And the highlight of the day was 61264 (aka 61002) cracking along tender first from Battersby to Whitby in evening sunlight after the day's drenching. A stunning ride with plenty of loco action.

Tomorrow promises more of the same to Pickering followed by UoSA, bless her, whisking us from Malton back to London, probably via all available loops on the ECML.

At this point one group of people need everyone's eternal thanks - the good engineers of Crewe Heritage Centre. Without their outstanding efforts to fix No 9 in the 36 hours available, there would probably have been virtually no steam on the Explorer. Oh, don't let's forget the MNLPS who added an extra day to their schedule at short notice.

Could any of this have been avoided? Well, everyone will have views about that. It's just sad that a trip that has promised so much, seems to be delivering relatively little of the interesting routes and largely through no fault of Steam Dreams but a combination of factors beyond their control.

Perhaps we should all hold our breath for Day 8!

Wish I did. It's bizarre - nothing on RTT yet.

Its was on RTT last night at 23:00 leaving Malton at 13:45, arriving London Vic at 20:35, bit that seems to have disappeared off the system again

Can someone confirm its still UoSA doing the run?

Well, we are on the 1100 Moors train arriving at Pickering at 1240. Add an hour for transfer and boarding at Malton. So work on about 1345 off Malton, 1415 at York and do the maths from there. 60009? There is nothing else!

Yes did it depart on time with a boiler up front? I plan to film it at Peterborough if its running on the 13:45 departure Malton schedule.

    Its still not on RTT

Running about an hour late, in part due to incorrect routing at malton.

Just waiting outside York, no official timings.

    Hello all,

    Pictures here: http://www.blackhatrailwaypictures.co.uk/p357840468

    Report:

Union of South Africa this week has certainly proved itself to be one of those engines that can lay claim to being the most reliable performer on the mainline. Having stood in for a failed Tornado with brake issues the A4 had rescued the DBS operated tour for Steam Dreams and hauled it almost circumnavigating England. Despite having baring issues that were repaired, the A4 still managed to be on fine form with the tour to Carlisle and Hexham. Tuesday gave the chance for the passengers to enjoy rare north east warmth and sunshine, but meant a positioning move from Tyne Yard to Stanhope in Weardale to position the stock and engine ready for the tour come Wednesday.

Its often said that really, steam engines are something not to be photographed going backwards. While the rule is often true, today had to be an exception with an A4 to Bishop Auckland and beyond up Weardale, this being the first time an A4 had managed to traverse the line and reach Stanhope. As such a chase ensued between Darlington and the trains destination at Stanhope. This was thrown into doubt when having passed Newton Aycliffe Station the A4 struck either a goose or swan which then damaged the air break pipe, causing the breaks to apply. With this Achillies heel, the train was brought to an abrupt halt mid section. While the crew valiantly carried our repairs to get the train underway, I ended up on a wild goose chase of my own trying to find a vantage point to see what happened.

With the A4 underway, the trip brought in the views of Weardale before being seen around Stanhope and the surroundings there, before I then had to dash back and resume Akela duties with the Cub Section back in Bishop.

    Hope you all enjoy,

    David

Not so much the kettles, just the ammount of them air braked thats the issue. West Coast would have been able to call on plenty of others that are Vac braked.
