    Indeed - which is why I make a point of at least having a brief word with them if I can at a water stop. Tonight we were quite early at Royston so had time for a decent chat with Dave while he was rolling out the hoses before we went round onto the platform.

    Do you think that one of the reasons for the diesel is that there was so much running through Central London that they dare not risk a breakdown where they would come to a complete halt and block one of the main routes?

    It is a reasonable surmise, but I think it unlikely because all steam hauled tours from London termini whether from Paddington, Victoria, Kings Cross, Waterloo or Euston often run without a diesel. 61306 has run several tours in and around London without a diesel and so the actual reason for it yesterday remains a mystery. Bottom line is that is was disappointing for those on and off the train, I suspect.
