For any photographers interested, TKh 2944 is working 2x return trips to Ipstones SOLO tomorrow on a private charter.

Guaranteed to have some noise up the bank. First train is roughly 10am off Froghall.

Is there any news to report on either of the S160s?

    Cheers

5197 boiler has just been completely restayed. Now it's just awaiting the delivery of the tubes.
Chassis is as complete as it can be without the boiler going on for piping up etc, but this is meant to happen before the month is over.
New smokebox is still to be made for her as well. Tender is complete IIRC mind.
Plan is to have her steaming for the Autumn.

6046 is away at Tyseley receiving a new cylinder block after being damaged at NVR. It is hoped to have back at CVR end of June / beginning of July, after which it will take about 2 weeks to put all her motion etc back on. Aim is to have her steaming for Fireman Sam weekend IIRC, after which she will remain on CVR for the rest of the year alternating with 2944.

The plan is to have doubleheaded S160s for November Gala, see how we get on with that!

I think two at the same gala would be a preservation first, would it not? Double headed would be something... couldn't try and secure 'Big Jim' as a guest and make it 3 of a kind could you? :D

    Cheers for the update

Just so happens pictures have appeared on our internal communication feed of 5197 boiler being reunited with the frames today!

As far as we are aware you are correct, 2x S160s have never steamed together in preservation. As for making it three, rather wait for 3278 to be finished and make it 4 for the 75th Anniversary of the class' arrival onto UK metals..! :p

I am I correct in presuming that the "restored heating van" being referred to is ADS70185 http://www.ws.vintagecarriagestrust.org/ws/WagonInfo.asp?Ref=8957 If so a very interesting vehicle to have taken on, how is it progressing?

Slight digression, but were there actually plans for preservation of the Cheadle Branch in the late 1970s? Three BR Mark 1 Suburban carriages, 43159, 46140 & 46213 were despatched from Whittlesea, Cambridgeshire on 10th January 1978, to Cresswell, Staffordshire (junction for Cheadle branch). Two of these 46140 & 46213 were subsequently acquired from Ellastone, Staffordshire by Midland Railway Centre in early 1980 and moved to Butterley by road. Ellastone presumably referred to The Titanic Steamship Company, Crab Key, Ellastone but was that where it was actually located or somewhere on the Cheadle branch. I for one would be very interested to know more about why the carriages were moved to Cresswell. Incidentally, the subsequent history of 43159 is a complete mystery.

'186 isn't it? But yes that is it. No work has started yet, as the BSK is taking longer than planned and then we have the RMB to finish. After this I think they want to get the second BSK in, plus the Mk2 could do with some repairs. Not forgetting the day-to-day maintenance of the running fleet, and an internal appeal has been done for the sole surviving Parrot wagon as well...

NSRC 2015 Raffle is to raise funds for the Heating Van eventual restoration, when we get round to it we shall let you know :)

Ellastone was on the Rocester - Ashbourne branch. I seem to remember there was a private collection on a farm near Ellastone in the 70's, but nowhere near the site of the station, perhaps this is what you are referring to? I think it belonged to the Bamford [JCB] family.

I don't ever remember coaches at Cresswell, the sidings there were visible from the crossing which I used regularly in those days and I'm sure I would have noticed them. Perhaps they were delivered to Cresswell and immediately taken to Ellastone by road.

Is it possible to confirm whether or not this has left the Churnet Valley Railway and arrived at Foxfield. VCT still showing it as located at Churnet Valley http://www.cs.vintagecarriagestrust.org/se/CarriageInfo.asp?Ref=2571

I also believe there was a connection between the Bamford {JCB} dynasty and the Ellastone site. Presumably a member of the family was an enthusiast. The 1979 IRS book 5EL lists ten steam locomotives present at Crab Key, Ellastone (SK 099433) which appears to be actually Waste Farm on the map so almost certainly the private collection recalled by Tim. The three carriages would have made an ideal branch line train BS+S+S which could well have been the reason for acquisition. Delivery to Cresswell then road movement to Ellastone would though be a logical conclusion. Did anyone ever visit the Ellastone site and see them there?

Many thanks to Lil Bear for the answers to my recent rolling stock queries. The impression I have from reading recent postings is that Oakamoor has either been completely cleared of rolling stock or if any remains it is awaiting scrapping or outward road movement. Both my listings http://www.rcts.org.uk/features/preservedcoaches/ and those of the VCT (we work very closely together) still have a number of items of coaching stock listed at the Churnet Valley but not included in the list on the website https://www.churnet-valley-railway.co.uk/coaches I presume that some remain on the railway mainly as stores vans, some have left for a new home and some have been scrapped. Thus, it would be very much appreciated if an update can be given with regard to the following:-
