Think you'll find that RTC trains were operated by EWS then their successor organisation DBS from 2003 to early 2009, using the Riviera Carriage Sets stabled at Bounds Green.

We only did Clan Line once over Sapperton. That was The Capitals United tour way back on 26th August 1989; a one way Shrewsbury-Hereford-Gloucester-Swindon run. Seem to remember the load being 13+POB and we stalled on Sapperton.

Sadly I think he has a yellow stripe across his footplate overalls - not south of Crewe!

Yes I was on that one. Load 11 + POB, 12 in total. Blowing off steam as we left Glos, but fire had clinkered over and stall was the result.

Not booked RTC for ages, got fed up with the shovage, but as they now seem to be using Tornado and Clan Line might be time to give them another go.

Thanks for clarifying the load Sean. Beer was way more important in those days.

IIRC, that was the occasion of the MNLPS's move from Hereford to Southall. I recall being told later that the support coaches (I have an idea there were 2 that day??) were well loaded with tools, spares, etc. which just added to the drag of the train. I was waiting for the train at one of the many foot crossings before Sapperton tunnel with a super-8 cine camera. I gave up when the light dropped too much but heard the arrival of an assisting DL and then the restart as I walked across the fields back to my car.

We actually started from Crewe, LE to Shrewsbury before picking up the train. (I was part of the support working party for that trip). I think the engine must have been doing some trips on the line to Bangor. But yes, we did end up at Southall via a water stop at the Didcot Railway Centre.

Can I come back briefly to this guest appearance by Clan Line on the RTC trip that their own email publicity seems to imply is quite a bonus for them and something that they think will "prove very popular"?

Having read the statements by the MNLPS on Facebook and their site it seems that this is an example of a loco owner helping another company get over a loco supply problem in much the same way that the Bahamas Locomotive Society has.

Given the excellent relationship that the MNLPS has with Belmond and, importantly with DBC, whose crews know Clan Line well and look after her, I'd personally be surprised if this is a sign of any major departure from existing arrangements.

The one thing that really benefits the society is that regular crews work regular routes with a loco that they know and like. This, in my view, is good for continuity in much the same way as the West Coast crews operating over Shap and the S&C.

That said, I will enjoy the prospect of a run over the Cotswold and Golden Valley lines.

Don't believe all that the RTC says in its publicity. They have form.

No it's Network Rail who have form, you know perfectly well that requests are put in for certain routes and then the wait begins for this to be approved. Meanwhile the tour has to be promoted based on the requested route. At some later date NR decides that it cannot be run that way, so an alternative has to be agreed, so to blame RTC or whoever is promoting or operating the tour is way off the mark.
