With regard to match funding , can we not offset the cost of volunteer labour against this ?

I think that the figure of GBP 4.1M was estimated as a very worst case in the event that all work had to be done at full market rates etc, the reason being that the feasibility of the project had to take account of such a situation. It may well be that the final cost will be less, especially given that volunteer labour will be used for most of the work, and material costs may be less depending on the markets at the time - 'smart' purchasing will play a big part in the process. Other things to consider are that there has already been a lot of investment in the project, and that further costs will be spread out over a considerable time. That said there will still be a considerable amount of money to be raised and any contributions are most welcome.

Give the track and signalling absolute priority. Just get as far as you can towards Corwen.
Build a one-platform two-coach halt at the railhead, with volunteer labour. Like the KESR built at Bodiam. But make everything from wood and textiles so you can shift it to Corwen when the track is complete. Run fare-paying shuttles up the line for visitors to view progress as the Bluebell do at their tip, but make "progress" visible, like having lengths of rail trackside.
Cultivate that sympathetic Assembly Member, even if you normally don't like Tories.

I'm sure the people at Corwen would rather see 50-60 people getting off a train - and some going into their shops - in three or four years' time, than wait ten years for a complete new station.

I have to agree with you there. get the track down asap. you have the t&wo now so can run trains. and if its only a halt for the time being then thats better than nothing. The plans for the station are only small anyway so its not the end of the world. Who knows you might get there and the original station could come up (who knows what the future holds, when i win the euro millions;)

I saw row upon row of track laid to the side between Gobowen & Shrewsbury on Thursday, as I believe this was the civil engineering work that was going on over the Autumn Gala weekend. Maybe Llangollen could purchase some of this off Network Rail??

Although it has all gone a little bit quiet, work is still going on. At the moment the railway and Environment agency etc are working together to come up with a plan for building the extension without it affecting the river / surrounding area.

With the whole of the River Dee being a SSSI, laying 2 1/2 miles of track isn't quite as simple as you'd expect. But as far as i'm aware the extension should be somewhere near being ready in 2012. Fingers crossed and all that sort of stuff....

As I'd imagained. Is there a specific website that is devoted to the extension that gives regular updates on the project?

Any news of the Corwen extension automatically goes onto the website as it is the main project for the railway at present.

Time for a brief update on this! Tracklaying started just before Christmas, and work is progressing well! We have been getting 6 to 8 panels down every weekend. Updates can be found on the link below:

    Corwen Extension Page

All being well, it should be somewhere near Bonwm, or maybe beyond for SSS3 in april.

On the Deeside & Glyndyfrdwy extensions we built 9 panels per weekend in the restricted Berwyn tunnel & 13 panels in open country, while also doing the tree cutting & fencing at the same time.

Progress on the extension can be seen on the Corwen station website:

corwen station home - corwen station

Currently the railhead is approximately half way to Bonwm, near the location of Carrog slate siding. and the ballast formation has been completed about 500yards further. Volunteers have been laying track every weekend, and there is a full working week on it from tomorrow onwards. Usually there is around 10 volunteers on site, and 5-6 panels are being layed each day.

Can anyone who has seen the extension first hand advise if there are any obvious "vistas" on this new section from public sites such as the A5 where trains will be photographable? Was wondering if the Llangollen Railway will have any new contenders for a flagship "scene" away from a station? I'm thinking scenes similar to the curve at Garthydwr...

There will be several sections that will be easy to phot from the footpath along the A5, though perhaps without the same elevation as found at Garthydwr.
