Is it only me who prefers the A4's WITHOUT the valances? I think they look much better without them.

Its not so much "without" the valances, as respecting their first design ethos, whereby the curve of the running plate was accentuated by the valances being black; and therefore contrasting with the boiler cladding. For some strange reason this was not perpetuated with the garter blue locos, although it was again done with the apple green livery, and of course, permanently with their removal.

I would love to see the Silver Link and Apple Green varieties if Mr H is so minded.

I thought silver links valances were a grey colouring ?

I read somewhere the inspiration for the livery of silver link came from the Silver Teal bird, a fast flying bird to which several of the class were named after.

Maybe Kent yeti (our resident birdologist :) ?) can comment ?

You've just given me an idea for a repaint on that '80s Mallard I've got lying about...what do we think, a navy or royal blue to offset the garter blue above?

I'm with you on that Brian.. with valences and A4 reminds me of some cars from way back, 'delux' models had their rear wheels partly concealed with valences, they looked terrible. The sweeping curve of the running plate has IMO a much more pleasing line.

Yeah, each year of footage I film gets compiled into a DVD, each of which is given a different name:-

2008/2009 - Ash On The Rails
2010 - Ash On The Rails - Turn Of The Decade
    2011 - Ash On The Rails - 3D
2012 - Ash On The Rails - The Return Of The Duchess

Had I known back in February that 60009 was returning this year as well as 46233 I would have given this year’s film a different name to include all of the returning engines, but unfortunately it's a bit late for that now.

    Thank you for being observant

Good to see No. 9 back doing what she/he/it does best - hauling trains for the enjoyment of passengers [and photographers too].
Congratulations to Steve Latham and his team at Crewe and I hope Fraser and the support crew have many happy years of railtouring in front of them.
P.S. When you've done a few years up North could the Swanage Railway 'borrow' it for a wee while? Pretty Please.
