At least they will have them on record, it's the same with the "civilian" police where cctv stills are put out in the hope of catching somebody.

Not much good if they were foreign tourists, someone has since told me he heard an American accent there.

There are a few things that are a bit odd about this. I believe that Appleby is a staffed station,is it not part of the staff's duties to patrol the platform when a train is in the station and dissuade people from going off the platform end. On every steam trip I have been on, the on-train stewards have been very proactive here - can anyone say why they were not in this instance?

Also,is there not a staffed signal box only yards away to the right just out of the picture. The signalman must presumably have been aware that no trains were due on the other track, otherwise surely he would have raised the alarm with the station staff. It just seems bizarre that people were wandering around on the track apparently in full view of the signal box.

I'm nor sure if Appleby is staffed by rail employees, the only ones you usually see there are the members of the 'Friends of the Settle & Carlisle' who run the shop selling souvenirs etc. Stewards were there but the trespassers were at the end of the platform when the train arrived, by the time the first steward got there, they were already on the track.

Some on board footage from the return trip, south of Penrith and later in the Manchester area. Thanks must go to Mr Chipperfield for the long whistle amongst the buildings heading between Deansgate and Piccadilly...

You are absolutely correct, just found this on wnxx forum:

Right lets put a few facts forward as it seems that no one until now has posted who was actually there to see this incident.

Firstly Mr Bun, nothing is as obvious as you attempt to make out, you are making assumptions based on three photographs, I was there and saw it as it happened.

I was on board the train in the second coach and jumped out as soon as we stopped to try to get a clear shot of the loco. Those people were already on the platform and heading down the ramp as I approached the loco and I can safely say they were not passengers.
Within a short time a steward arrived followed quickly by a second and they began moving them off the track, some at first refused saying they 'just' wanted another quick front shot. It took place very quickly and not as Mr Bun suggests over a period of time.
In no way could the action of the stewards be faulted and I do not see how any blame can be apportioned to the tour operator or TOC. Station operator, are there any operators staff on Appleby station?

However it was noted a few minutes later that there were 2 tour coaches outside the station and it seems that the trespassers were in fact from them, and had been told earlier that there was a 'steam train' due shortly that would be stopping for a short time.
