Perhaps we should have done a swap then  I am also waiting for the chance to see if "Britannia" is as good as "Oliver Cromwell". However, as with any tour, I take the view that I have booked it and at least it is running so I will go on it regardless and enjoy it - even if the end product is not quite as originally offered.

I find the Scots Guardsman a very boring & over rated loco.

Obviously not seen it at home in the Northern Fells. Power for power rating - at 7P it packs its 33150 lb of tractive effort into an 83 ton locomotive compared with the 27175 lb of tractive effort packed into an 86 ton unrebuilt / 90 ton rebuilt WC / BB - its such a beast that West Coast restricts its use to those who know how to handle it.

When its out you can hear it echoing for miles before you see it - and once heard at full bore it will never be forgotten. Its such an awesome engine that I sometimes find it hard to choose between 46115 and 60009 as my all-time favourite locomotive !

I would suggest you come up north to see it - enter the real world and see a REAL engine at work.

Info from reliable sources confirms 46115 - I expect Copy Pit to be rather packed on Wednesday morning

That's such an excellent argument until you mention number 9! For me, that's like saying 'Lakeland Gold on draught is beautiful, up there with John Smiths!'

(tongue in cheek - each to their own ;) - I await the bashing from number 9 fans in due course!)

I know that I'm not on this trip but I wonder when was the last time that Tangmere went up Shap?

Well, I know I'm going off topic a little as well but I wish either Ollie or Sutherland could get one more CME this summer. A 3/2/2 combination of the pacifics one the CME would be far more balanced as opposed to a 4/2/1 as what is currently proposed. Nigel

Never I think. She was meant to on March 1st 2003 on the 'Excalibur Express', but failed at Oxenholme.

As "linesider" says the answer is never. It did get to Oxenholme on its very first run but failed when a cork came out and the train was subsequently rescued by double headed virgin thunderbirds that were turned back having passed the train heading north whilst it was stood in Oxenholme loop.

I know - I handed over £66 between Carnforth and Milnthorpe - and disembarked at Oxenholme. No interest at all in paraffin can haulage

Since No 9 was one of my 7 Pillars of Wisdom regarding Steam Locomotives ( Nos 4 / 11 / 12 / 24 / 27 and 31 being the others ) when I first began to appreciate steam locomotives in the early 1950s ( and my uncle worked at Haymarket ) I acknowledge that I quickly understood that there were many inferior machines around. However on a philosophical level, you can only appreciate the best by sampling the worst and Haymarket was THE place to sample the VERY best.

That's good news. It'll be a good show then as they'll have to work it hard in places such as shap. Anyone know what Tangmere is doing once it's been detached at Farrington Junction?

Are we sure that a DL won't be attached to the rear at Carnforth as "insurance" bearing in mind that 34067 didn't run without one on its last few trips and also that it is the first run after its overhaul? If the whole train is being turned at Carlisle a DL will be needed there.
Anyone at WCRC prepared to comment?
