    In France these were intended more to ensure the drivers did not ignore speed limits, hence crews called the Flaman recorder "L'Espion" (The Spy). I have actually seen one (not working) on a very lively metre gauge 2-6-0-T. Known as "le levrier" (the greyhound) by the way!
