    Just to clarify, most mark 1 coaches didn't have internal door handles. I think it was only the short underframe suburban coaches which had internal handles. ( And of course Guards compartments.)
    For mark 1 bodyshell emu's there was a clear policy. Suburban units EMU's like EPB's, HAPS and VEPS had internal catches, but express stock, CEP's CIG's and REP/TC did not. From memory, a similar split applied on first generation dmu's although I didn't take much notice when commuting on them for a few years in the 1970's.
