Unfortunately, for one reason or another we will not be having a night shoot over this weekend. Look out for future events where they will make a return. Apologies.

Could someone kindly advise which way 73129 faces, and did the two Class 5's arrive back facing south again, thanks?
Weather for Saturday looking promising, Sunday is a write-off, perhaps the debate about the morning charter becomes academical?

Suddenly, the timetable isn't looking so appealing. Does "class 5s" include 73129?

Rumour has it that MetroL**k will be running as normal through Victoria from next Monday so (I hardly dare say it) no more Bus Replacement Nonsense.

Looking forward to this, I still haven't actually had a sustained run behind the Crab so that's target number 1 for me.

I'm trying to work out the afternoon train with Black 5's and the K4 on the Sturday, is that a triple header both ways with the locos facing each other? Unusual if so and I'm sorry to say but yes £40 to turn up on-spec on Sunday morning will ensure this approach is killed off completely, I understand your reasoning but that is completely unrealistic and a shame no other solution could be found.

Ian Riley has stated on another forum that attempts are being made to get the Black Fives turned before the weekend (presumably at Castleton). If that's the case and I'm reading the timetable correctly...

12.30 Bury to Rawtenstall will be 61994 piloting 44871 (both chimney first)
13.30 Rawtenstall to Heywood will be 45407 on the front with 44871 and 61994 on the rear (all tender first)
14.50 Heywood to Rawtenstall will be triple-headed by 45407+61994+44871 (in that order, all chimney first)
16.30 Rawtenstall to Bury should be triple-headed (all tender first ... but as they can only run one loco round at a time at Rawtenstall, the order of locos is not certain and it may be easier to leave two on the back).

The timetable makes perfect sense if the fives are turned. There will be some cracking BR black combos.

If I might be the only person to think so, chimney to chimney or tender to tender combos could be pretty interesting.

Just like mainline steam 40 years ago when there was nowhere to turn the locos.

"It having been brought to my attention, I am picking up on the comment by Frazoulaswak that the £40.00 turn up on the day rate is the "wrong side of extortionate" for the early morning runpasts.

First of all, for those who do not know me, under the 3P20 banner I have been organising photo charters on the ELR and elsewhere since 2001 and for the avoidance of doubt take full responsibility for the pricing structure for these events.

Andi has already gone through the maths relating to the cost of coal and the minimal revenue generated on some days, so no need to repeat that.

When the decision was taken for last October's Steam Event to move across from pay on the day to book in advance, based on the cost of coal having doubled, an increase from £10.00 to £20.00 was determined as being a reasonable benchmark for one hour of photography. I therefore discounted the book in advance rate to £15.00 with £20.00 as the pay on the day rate for each day across the weekend. The feedback I received was that rather than book in advance, the majority were prepared to take their chances at the £20.00 rate. Whilst the lack of commitment was disappointing, it confirmed £20.00 as the bench-mark rate. However, this resulted in the cancellation of the Saturday and I underwriting the Sunday, because I wanted it to happen. In the event I covered what I had underwritten.

January no longer works with the timings, so February was the next event. As people were not prepared to book in advance for a discount, I decided to try and stimulate advance bookings with the pre booked rate at £20.00 and £40.00 for turn up on the day. This was in the full knowledge that there would be precious few takers for the on the day rate, unless there was a mega forecast.

As of Tuesday I had 6 people prepared to book in advance, however the decision by others was to run. This has now increased to 9. Having tried both the discount and "penalty" options, there do not appear to be any other pricing permutations left to try. As neither has produced anywhere close to the commitment required, it is difficult to justify the future operation of the pre gala runpasts.

To those on the forum who made the commitment, you have my grateful thanks."
