How about some ex-GWR 'constituents' locos (eg A&ND ex Mersey Railway 2-6-2T or Cambrian 4-4-0's & 0-6-0's) in exchange for some of the unrestorable 28xx's and Bulleids?

    A 4F for a 3F maybe? One of the A4s in the US\Canada for a WD 2-8-0 too

Considering how many were built it is surprising only one WD 2-8-0 survived.

They were brilliant locos, powerful, steamed well, were easy to fire. Did everything that was asked of them, their only drawback was the bad riding. I remember watching some of 26Ds allocation shunting at Radcliffe north junction when I was a kid

Mmmm, from out in the Antipodes...

How about changing a Black 5 for a CR 'Cardean' Class loco?

Also, one of the Standard 4 2-6-4T s for a Whitelegg GSW Baltic?

Both are like for like in terms of post grouping railways and (almost) designed purpose.

There's something like 85 Hunslet Austerities in varying degrees of preservation. Surely some of these'd be candidates for swapping over.

One Austerity for a Metropolitan A Class 4-4-0T.

One Austerity for a Mersey 2-6-2T, the earlier ones based on the NSWGR 25 Class.

One Austerity for an Isle of Wight 2-4-0T.

One Austerity for an LNWR George V Class 4-4-0.

One Austerity for an LNWR Cauliflower.

And the fairest swaps of all, two Austerities for an LNER U1 and LMS Garratt.

I think most of your Austerity swaps fall foul of the last rule:

    THE RULES:
-The locomotives exchanged must have been designed and built to do broadly the same job (e.g. you can trade a 9F for a Gresley O3, or a Castle for a GNR Atlantic)

    Sorry!

If it wasn’t for the ‘same type’ rule I’d be swapping out lots of Austerity 0-6-0st, Bullied MNs and light Pacific’s for a load of Eastern types.

    K3s, D16s, F5/6s, more B1s...

Rules is rules. Actually having some rules in a thread like this leads to creativity: otherwise it really might as well be “what’s your favourite loco”.

Reducing the GWR population even by one gets my vote. :)

You can trade as many Bullied light Pacifics as you like but leave the Bulleid light Pacifics alone, unless you want to wake up to a horse's head on your pillow. :) Now if you change your shopping list to swapping a few Halls for your Eastern selection, you'll get my vote.

Reducing the ranks of "preserved" diesels to one of each class - Deltics excepted - would give a lot of scope for rescuing long lost steam classes. :) Half a dozen 47s for half a dozen locos from GSWR, Caley, Highland Rly., Hull and Barnsley and the like would be a good trade I reckon.
