2-3-2 U1 now in Mulhouse museum. Makes almost anything which ran in this country seem a bit basic.

7802 - Bradley Manor, I have a soft spot for as I passed out for firing on her. Although I quite like 5164 too

An Ivatt Class 4, preferably with the numbers 43106 in the running number. I never had a thing for Ivatt's as I always thought they look too foreign, but since the turn out of 43106 down on the SVR I've had a soft spot for Class 4's since.
That, or anything designed by Stanier!

I'll back you up on that because I've worked down at Bewdley MPD many times with these two, quite at home on the Valley IMHO.

My favourite is the one with a fire in it, with steam coming out of it, that happens to be in front of me at the time.

Well, if you're looking for the visual perspective, I offer the Midland "Spinner" as a piece of locomotive art :)

How does one make a choice? I couldn't, though some locos leap more readily to mind than others.

I have a fondness for all things Southern, especially LSWR. The Adams T3 (the NRM's sole survivor is currently in Cananda) is arguably the most beautiful loco ever built, though the Midland "Spinner", Stirling's GNR "Single" and Drummond's T9 (before superheating) come close. We are lucky to have such a variety of Victorian and Edwardian tank locos still around and still running, too. O2 Calbourne, M7, Adams Radial, 2 Beattie Well Tanks, not to mention multiple Terriers. If only an SECR 4-4-0 (perhaps an E or an L1) had survived...

T9 120 has a special place in my heart, because I had my first cab ride from Ropley to Alresford on her, when a trainee signalman. Likewise, the other MHR stalwarts (Bodmin, Swanage and 76017 in particular) are very dear to me.

My first mainline steam trip was behind Clan Line, during the first Blackmore Vale Express weekend in, I think, 1986. My dad and I were timing her and were very impressed with her speed uphill and down! On the long downhill run "up" from Semley we quickly passed 75mph, though I forget the final top speed ;-)

35028 is definately one of my favourite locos. I to also had my first mainline run with 35028 to Canterbury in 1998 (then had another to Yeovil the following year) plus she's given me some surprises going past on VSOE's when I go up to London). 34081 is also a favourite as I first saw her at a brief stop at Wansford (whilst on our way to Pickering which was also 1998 I think) just after she entered service. Then again at her first Bluebell visit followed by 2 of her other visits to the Bluebell. Both great runners as well. Again another reason for 92240 was I think my first Bluebell journey was behind the loco.

35028 was my first mainliner, sometime in the 90s, down to Bournemouth if I remember correctly. The tickets were won by a couple we knew vaguely at a local fete raffle, they were on holiday that particular weekend, they knew I liked steam - job done!

Back on topic though, I stick with my previous comments regarding 42968, but would just like to add that I think Jersey Lilys and LSWR T3s are absolutely gorgeous! And I wish an Aberdare had been saved...

If only - that would have been temendous! I think you mean the P2 2-8-2 which incorportated some French practices? I and many others are also backing the re-creation of this :)

yes of course! sorry:redface: for the mistake!
This splendid engine was tried in France in 1934 I believe in the area of Etampes (on the line Paris-Orleans-Bordeaux)and on a testbed and made a very great impression on the french railwaymen and Chapelon

Re an SECR 4-4-0 - have you not heard of the Wainwright D in the NRM? :) Would be lovely to see that in steam!

Have to agree with you about the Adams T3 - what a beautiful loco!
