Given the number of 4472 pictures in the public domain and countless 4472 models etc. that have been sold over the years, I'm certain that many non enthusiasts wouldn't be fooled by a FS nameplate on 6229.

I don't know about that. When 60007 was down the MHR some years ago a father said to his young son "Look at that nice blue diesel" whilst pointing at SNG!:Jawdrop:

    Never forgot that moment.

Dear, oh dear. Clearly not a diesel as completely the wrong shade of blue!

    hi andrew,

i think you and many others underestimate the British public! most people who werent even born in WW2 know the difference between a Spitfire and a Hurricane, and most people expect to see Flying Scotsman with a single chimney and without those hideous germanic smoke deflectors.
it would be perfectly possible to alter or replace the blastpipe nozzles so that the smoke deflectors can be removed. i would go the whole hog and have the smoke deflectors removed and fit a single chimney.

im no LNER fan, but the smoke deflectors alone are are as bad as what Thompson did to Great Northern.

    cheers,
    julian

Good grief. Does everything that railway enthusiasts think to be "bad" have to be equated with an anti-Thompson sentiment?

It's almost getting to the point where "doing a Thompson" is almost a phrase for describing something bad happening - and he wasn't as bad as is described by a number of extreme sources, nor was his engineering quite frankly.

For the record, Thompson produced a locomotive that was considered to be good by the operating department. Read Peter Townend's book East Coast Pacifics at Work for a reasonable and balanced break down of the pros and cons of 60113. An underrated machine unfortunately forever condemned by the somewhat over-egged indignation at the choice of name.

And - FYI - some of us like the German smoke deflectors on the late era BR A3s, thank you! ;)

And judging by some of the comments by others there is quite a few who think they're the opposite to "like"!!

I'd give a tenner to see FS back in the form for which it achieved its iconic status.

Im not that fussed generally- variety is nice is my only real view on liveries. ....

.......But FS became an icon for its orignal record, returning steam to BR and going to Oz and America. All of which it did in its non BR form.

The majority of the public associate it with apple green and no ears (worldwide) -surely there can be no argument for that?

I remember seeing tornado in its early years in apple green and hearing a member of the public telling a child quute adamantly that it was the flying scotsman- such is tge power and strength of the apple green brand!

Anyway. However it comes back I'll be pleased- its been a long time in the making and I am sure it won't disappoint!

That is indeed the team's nickname. It would seem that Enterprise is not a follower of lower league football.

Au contraire. 14th I think in their division. That's why I asked what they had to do with anything.

It is often supposed that very little of the original 1923 loco survives. However three or four years ago I was assisting with the modification of the cab to enable it to fit the current Network Rail loading gauge restrictions. Removing the side window slides revealed that these were stamped 1472. Now the cab has clearly undergone several modifications itself over the years but it does seem to have remained with the loco throughout. Surely this is not the only component to do so. Maybe more of the original loco survives than is popularly believed.

Well now that we're all agreed on the league position of Northampton Town...!

Honestly, I'd pay to see the single chimney restored, but not now. I'm so looking forward to the BR green beauty returning.

If the NRM asked for funds for this, I'd happily send money but to see FS as I remember her in 1994... Well, made my year.

Time for me to strap myself with salmon and jump into the bear enclosure, but I actually think the smoke deflectors make it look better proportioned. The smokebox just looks too stubby IMO without them and I even think they look right with the LNER guise :Saywhat:
