In the interest of keeping peace, thats probably not a good idea :)
Why not "like" post 79 instead.

Why not? That's probably what the majority would vote if they could be bothered with such stuff.

Sorry if it offends but I really don't see the point of this thread. Some while ago the NRM made it quite clear that, for (valid IMHO) operational reasons, 'Scotsman' would be keeping its double chimney and German style smoke deflectors. IIRC they also stated that for commercial reasons it would, initially, be painted in LNER livery possibly with B.R. green at a later date due to pressure from enthusiasts. If their policy has changed recently I haven't heard of it - maybe Anthony Coulls can comment. I think we all know which livery is "correct" for the loco - it was only converted to A3 condition in 1947 but it is the NRM's loco and they will ultimately decide. Ray.

I go along with you on that point as a personal view. One of the advantages of this thread existing (even though it's pretty obvious that only a small minority supports the basic question) is that it hopefully will remove from the substantive FS thread all the stuff that has little to do with her return to steam.

"Valid operational reasons" not likely - the loco worked perfectly well in single chimney form it even 'managed' to tour two other countries! As far as I can see there are two reasons the double chimney is being retained; £ & pandering to the "paint it black or drab green brigade". Anthony has stated there is a cutorial wish for it to return to its earlier preservation form (Apple Green & single chimney) that the general public know and love. Lets hope it's time with the elephant ears is a short one . . .

Could it just be that the loco has cost a fortune so far, and to start altering the blastpipe arrangement and chimney/smokebox configuration would just add time and cost to the exercise?
At least the NRM are holding out the prospect of such a change in the future, so perhaps credit them with the right decision at the present time. Lets see the loco up and running without further avoidable expense.

I actually prefer them like that. I think they somehow look more 'complete'. I have four model A3's, only one without deflectors.

I'm afraid I don't trust the NRM with any of its ever altering statements and promises over the years.
People have donated money to see this engine back on the main line, many of these are not enthusiasts just everyday people.
The handling of many things by the NRM (York) is very unprofessional at times, and the number of proper sucesses can be counted on one hand, but errors, layout at museum, research opening hours etc shows that the NRM can't be trusted to keep their word, just look at their record, and the whole Flying Scotsman Saga.

The cab sides, maybe some of the other platework. Some of the cab fittings. Wheel centres and possibly some rods. Not the frames, cylinders, boiler, nameplates or tender. I'm not maintaining that it is not, in a real sense, Flying Scotsman, but I'm just pointing out that arguments based on 'authenticity' are pretty thin.

I don't think the general public will care whether it has deflectors or not, though they might prefer it in apple green. I happen to like BR/GWR green, even though I'm a fan of LNER locos. There is no reason whatsoever why it can't be apple green with the deflectors - its a working locomotive and has run like that before. It was never an A3 in LNER days, so any apple green livery is unauthentic even apart from the relatively small amount of the original loco that remains.

If people are so desperate to have an LNER A1/A3, why not a new build or a 'rebuild' using whatever odds and sods that are about, in Festiniog fashion?

Just so. If this thread cannot add anything new to what has been rehearsed more times than I'd care to think then perhaps it should be locked to comments but leave the voting option open?

Does anyone have a (constructive) view?

No harm in leaving it open IMO as long as it stays within forum rules? The (recurring) 'debate' will only shift back to the Scotsman Overhaul thread if this one is closed.....

German preservationists have it relatively easy: ......In most cases matt black with red wheels and frames, and smoke deflectors; and don't the 2-cylinder locos (Class 50/52.8's etc.) bark, with their single chimney.

As a spotter I saw all the A3's except for the pair at Carlisle Canal and three Haymarket ones, and I'm looking forward to a trip down memory lane when 60103 appears. A GN coal-rail tender would be nice, too (although she had a streamlined non-corridor in BR days).

Yes. The important thing is to complete the overhaul and get her running. The livery is of secondary importance IMO. If in the fullness of time we get to see her in various liveries then so much the better.

Lock it, this is going round in circles and getting nowhere, the NRM have spoken and that is that. Finish it Mr Riley, get it bedded in, and get it to KX.

I'm surprised and disappointed that this is still rumbling on. I'm afraid for me this poll is just about the same level as "lets create a facebook group and restore the world" of credibility and it does the forum no good at all. Did anyone dare to ask the NRM if this is fixed in place for the full boiler life for the next ten years, what the the return plans are? No lets just add some more froth to the paint saga because its not the result I wanted immediately so I'm going to throw my toys out of the pram.
The loco has been restored to a project plan on a solid basis for the last eighteen months compared to the major problems before, and no where in that spec suggested by the leading engineering lights in this country was a change back to a single chimney asked for or required. The NRM, damned regardless of what they did, came out and said they would return the loco in an authentic form as possible for the way it has been restored in the overhaul. Isn't that what many have been asking for all along, a recognition of the need for authenticity as much as it possible? The vote would suggest that is the case, and if someone wants to revive in this five years time and hand a large pot of money over to the NRM then fine, but otherwise surely it is time to move on and just welcome the return after eleven years of the only A3 in existence?

Sorry but this is a really silly poll. If it's a steam locomotive and if it's out there earning its keep taking people around then it gets my vote whatever the shape of its chimney and that's what I'm looking forward to with Flying Scotsman whenever it happens. The next thing you know there'll be a poll started by someone about the colour we should have steam locomotives..........
