Here we have the surprising sight of the Waterloo to Woking local stopping service held at Byfleet Junction to allow FS up onto the SW main line. Followed by FS flying through a crowded (and annoying woman with a very large iPad) Dorking west

here is the OTT diagram of the junction Junction.png

    and the waveform of FS

Was that a child blowing a very small and faulty toy whistle at Dorking West, or was it really the means by which the most famous steam loco in the world warns of its approach?!

We all know the unfortunate answer to that one.

With respect I still don't understand why the video fraternity like station platforms so much, it's almost inevitable that you will get people all over the place especially with this loco.

Byfleet and New Haw was from a station platform, and I can't see any people all over the place.

You try filming on the bottom end of the ECML, you need to get under the wires and between the posts, and inevitably that can only be done from a platform.

I was thinking of the Dorking location and for under the wires which I don't usually do it's just a matter of looking, this wasn't off a station. I think it's different for stills when you look at a still image anything in the way will hit the eye immediately 1160 60103 Arlesey 25-02-16.jpg
I wasn't trying to be critical it's just that I see a lot of video filmers seem to like station locations.

With stills you can pick a spot tween the posts, video viewpoint is moving so there is no perfect clear "snap" So you wont film under the wires? with respect I don't see the point of throwing such a limitation into play.

With the Surrey hills, summer is difficult, its very tree lined. I would have been at foot crossings, but they will be policed and difficult to access. Apparently there were 30 people at west byfleet, and some jobsworth barred using the length of the platform, bundling the spectators into a dangerous little scrum at platform edge.

Not my finest effort (I think it's pretty terrible to be honest), but a record shot nonetheless.

60103 racing through the Surrey Hills approaching Dorking West. I wanted to get a shot of 60103 through the landscape similar to my shot at Hackhurst Farm last week, but as you go towards Reigate, the undergrowth gets worse and worse. The location I had planned to go to was very overgrown, with the bottom half of the train being behind the undergrowth... definitely a winter location!

Instead, I went for a wide shot at a foot crossing...

My footage of not only today's run, but also last week's. As well Tornado on the British Pullman on Friday.

    Locations include:

    60163 - Chilworth
60103 - Virginia Water, Blackheath Lane Crossing and Hackhurst Lane.

well i was at a spot outside redhill station trying to replicate a shot of tornado i have from here, i managed a shot of FS coming round the curve from reigate and then got bombed out by two service trains one going up and one down by the time it was clear FS was going through the station and all i could get was the diesel on the back, i'm not impressed, thanks to mrknowwun i know where i'm going next time DSC_3904-crop (Medium).JPG DSC_3906-crop (Medium) (2).JPG DSC_3906-crop (Medium) (2).JPG

There's nothing wrong with that picture, quite atmospheric conveying the feel of today's grotty weather. You did better than me I stayed at home! I don't know how much photoshopping you did to get that but it looks Ok to me. It would look good in B/W with more contrast and the addition of film grain. The line is reasonably clear the other side of Dorking near Boxhill, Park in the NT carpark and walk down but like here it's downgrade but you can get a bit of exhaust depending where it opens up for a run at Betchworth Bank

I didn't have much luck with this today either. Went to Guildford as I combined the visit with a little shopping trip to get a spare battery for my new camera. Just after arriving the heavens opened.
When 60103 did arrive my compact camera decided to have a funny turn and took forever to zoom back so I didn't get as many shots as I hoped for. Anyway my disappointing shot is below of "The Peoples Engine" attracting the attention of the People. It was quite amusing as there were only a few of us waiting with cameras for 60103 to come through. As soon as one of the Station staff announced that the next train to come through would be the Flying Scotsman people were coming from all directions with their phone cameras at the ready!

Thank you John! I try not to use photoshop too much, just cropping the image and occasionally raise the exposure and the highlights, but that's all I ever do.

I'll have a look at Boxhill for the next Surrey Hills trip... :)

Brilliant. Loved both shots. The stopping train behind held for FS is just as it should be but great to see. And racing through Dorking was spine tingling. Was that Ian Riley hanging out the fireman's side. I swear it was. Could be wrong though.

Thanks very much for popping out to capture this as it gives a very clear view of the loco running through the station.

So are we any wiser as to what is causing the clearance problem? We are told that the speed limit is 5 mph which is about as slow as you can get without banning the loco completely and that's about what it seems to be doing. I looked at the video a few times but I'm still none the wiser. Perhaps Milton Keynes needs to be sent a copy of the video so they can pinpoint which part of Flying Scotsman was at risk of demolishing the platform?

Normals popping out to see her?...................

There is nowt to suggest she's OOG....................... when she came out of Pads 1st time round & got switched to the fast, she was up to speed through Iver, yet on the return through the relief, she crawled in & then opened up - yet last Saturday, she cruised through the down slow & then the same again on the up fast, at least at 60........................ so just what the hell is going on?...... NR not knowing what to do due to supposed crowds on platforms? ( that I can live with, just)

Indeed - the same picture was posted on the staircase from platform 3. However, NR asks us to stand behind the yellow line - the picture shows none, and also shows people standing on the tactiles - is this supposed to show what not to do, or what to do?!
