Nah, blue is at least an actual locomotive livery, how about that rainbow gradient fill from MS office that used to be so overused, with the lettering in Comic Sans? :D

What's the betting we'll get kicked out into a separate thread for discussing ludicrous liveries...

True, but you want to paint her pink!

Anyway, enough thread drift............... 2015 will see her back on the mainline, where she belongs bringing joy to thousands - me included. :)

The one thing nobody as commented on is the damage that as been done to The NRM .all the people who were involved with it 3 years ago are no longer there. The article in last months steam railway with quotes from some of the people that are no longer there gives a insight into what the future will be like it will just be a museum with very little if any working exhibits.

As for another overhaul the engine will be over 100 years old so make the best of it while you have chance.

Am I the only person on this forum that has never seen FS actually in steam?

As I said, it's been in the workshops most of my life, so add me too :( Not sure If I've even seen it at all come to think of it, maybe in bits, the last time I visited the NRM I was given a film camera - yes I do remember them! It's not like I haven't tried either, got tickets to go to Barrow Hill a couple of years ago, was supposed to have A1, 2, 3, 4 all lined up. In the event they had Bittern instead, but it wasn't the same. Effing freezing day too IIRC!

Dad managed to see it in steam completely by accident when at the P&D (or whatever it was called then) in the '90s; lucky bugger!

I've not seen it in steam, either. I've seen it mostly in one piece, but not complete. I suppose part of my reticence towards liking the thing is the phrase 'what I never have, I'll never miss'.

First saw 4472 in 1964. Been following her fortunes ever since. Was at Derby when she returned from the USA. Travelled many, many mile behind her. Even drove her on an NVR service train back in '93. :)

I bagged 4472 at Winchester and then again the same day crossing Caute road going in to Southampton dock. Myself and a fellow MHR volunteer walking in to the docks and had a good look around the loco.

I think the last time I saw 60103 as it was was when it was first outshopped with the double chimmney and smoke deflectors must admit it made an impression and I do like A3's looking like that. Since then its dropped of the radar for me, my heart was taken by another namely 60532 Blue Peter... What a lovely machine that is and it also helps that it wears the correct shade of green!

If we're all comparing notes of when we have or haven't travelled behind her I'll add mine: The Palatine railtour on 18/11/67, and The Tall Ships to So'ton on 14/04/00 when they forgot to co-ordinate train paths with the tides and we arrived after most of the ships had left. I have a little bit of video from the latter but probably not good enough to be worth posting.

For those in doubt, if you can find it on the Beeb, the Timeshift programme should do it! ;)

Saw it on the Nene Valley Railway when it visited, in BR Guise when I was very small (6 or 7 years old) I remember being a bit gutted that it didn't look like the 'Flying Scotsman' I had read about in books seen on videos (I had a great video with a load of footage of it from Australia that I absolutely drove my parents up the wall wanting to watch on a more or less daily basis) or that was on the cutaway diagram of how it worked on my bedroom wall!

I guess thats why I can kind of identify with why people get a bit worked up about pigmented protective coatings!

The last time I saw Scotsman, and the only time I rode behind it, was at the ELR in the 1990s - I'd never been there before, and finding myself in Manchester at a loose end went to look around, not expecting anything to be happening, it being rather out of season. A rather pleasant surprise!

My more treasured memories are watching Scotsman working on the GNR lines out of King's Cross, I think in 1969, when it was the only standard gauge steam loco on BR. We lived in north London at the time and I happened to see Scotsman working through our local station both on passenger workings, or light engine, purely by chance on several occasions. I remember being quite taken by the apple green shining amongst the grime, and the drab blues and greys taking over everything!

Flying Scotsman is one of perhaps 3 locomotives that could, in the right context, be called iconic, along with Mallard and Rocket. However, that doesn't mean that the publicity kiddies should use the word over and over again!

I watched the famous film of her 1968 non-stop run on the TV, in black & white, the first time it was broadcast. I would have been 5 years old. The first time I saw her in real life was at Paignton in the early 1970s - I cabbed her that day, though she wasn't in steam. The last time I saw her was on the last of her Sunday lunch trains to Didcot and back, on a rather gloomy October evening, passing Somerton, south of Banbury.

As for livery - be careful what you wish for! Perhaps she should be light blue with red boiler bands, rectangular buffers and a big number "4" on the side of a smaller 6-wheeled tender? :p
