Can someone please enlighten me about the large "502" on the cabside?

It was very briefly renumbered to 502 in January 1946 before becoming 103 in May 1946.

The number of people who have been bankrupted by this loco so far?

To be serious for once, I understand that it was the number the loco carried after 4472 during a period of LNER renumbering before becoming No 103 and then 60103 on Nationalisation.

    (Martin beat me to it!)

Edward Thompson implemented a new numbering scheme in the mid 40s and some locomotives (including Flying Scotsman) wore a temporary number prior to receiving their final LNER number in the renumbering sequence. 4472 became 502 (with a change to wartime black as well) and this then became 103 which remained her number until 1948 and nationalisation, when it became E103 and then 60103 accordingly.

....which was less successful than his rebuilds of the Gresley P2!

is it the number of faults that have had to be fixed? , At least the old girl is now on the final leg, and , for the first time in a long time she will not be expected to run her self into the ground in order to maximise her earning potential she will run to sensible loadings and receive the proper maintenance , if only because IR has his reputation to protect .its good to see her back, and vacuum braked, as well as air, i assume she will be registered with both West Coast and DBS, because i am sure at one point a Pulman from Kings Cross to York with 60103, and Deltic hauled on the return looks to be a must do option, if the NRM can arrange something with the Belmont pulman.

His numbering scheme: it only lasted about 5 years before it had to be rebuilt...

Getting more excited about 60103's prospects on the mainline by the day. We have a good group of locomotives that are starting to emerge from the overhaul shops and also optimistic about that. With Scotsman being back hopefully more tours shall sell well. Prospects are looking great.

    Cheers

Hopefully better than the one I saw a couple of nights ago, produced by Simon Groom. One of those "any old footage will do" type films. Lots of non LNER footage purporting to be 4472/LNER as well as inaccuracies in the script.

Following complaints I have removed a post (and the replies to it) pending moderator discussion. In the meantime can I ask that everyone refrains from making allegations without any evidence to back it up as if proved incorrect then ultimately the original poster is ultimately responsible for their comments but also avoiding such subjects avoids any potential hassle for the forum in the future so everyones cooperation is appreciated.

    Cheers Pete

I've removed the quote from my message, and added some context for clarity. Can return it to original fairly easily if mods decide the original post was kosher.

Interesting how the "failure" of that scheme is down to Thompson when Peppercorn perpetuated it when he took over before BR simply added 60000 to the numbers...but whatever.

Any excuse so long as it's misinformed I suppose...

Thompson introduced it so don't blame Peppercorn.
So 502 Flying Scotsman had 60000 added to its number by BR?
That notion appears to be somewhat misinformed to me!

All I know, is, that Thompson didn't get his hands on 4472 - thank god, amen etc, etc, and if he's actually chosen Humourist as a test bed for his "idea's", as Gresley often did, then no doubt nobody would've given a monkeys.........

So, can we please stop this Thompson's better than Gresley rot, and get back to celebrating the long overdue of 4472's return to the metals, please?........... ;):)

You've misread what I have said entirely. Please continue to: it reflects more on yourself than it does on me.

If you could point me to where in the last four years of research and debate on this forum I have ever said that I'd be happy to correct myself. However I have never said that, nor ever intimated that.

And once again, the populist view and deliberate misinformation comes out to smear Thompson unnecessarily (and myself by default). Given I was merely correcting a bit of misinformation originally, the response since then has, shall we say, been unnecessary.

But if that's how you get your kicks, carry on. Not bothered in the slightest - reflects more on those who do it than I.

Give it a rest - you've milked this forum for what its worth, so you can 'profit' from writing a book about a failed engineer - stick to the kiddie stories, seeing as how you seem to be wearing blinkers to the real world.

As for getting my kicks - I do that by volunteering, and putting something into the movement. like my time. my money, my experience - do you?......... no - didn't think so = otherwise, you'd know what the real world is.

Now. PLEASE can we get back to 4472?...........

I asked as a general plea, for people to stop the Gresley v Thompson rot, to please desist (which you more or less instigated and persons responded) yet you could not resist........

This thread is about 4472 - and nothing else - end of.
