The 'Dailyfail' gets it wrong again! The loco in the video is 4476 'Royal Lancer'!
    Still, it had a 'Flying Scotsman' headboard....so that's ok.

Of course the non-stop run shown on the poster wasn't a record. The record was set the previous Friday by a Scot running the 401.4 miles from Euston to Glasgow, followed 10 minutes later by a Compound running 399.7 miles to Edinburgh. Just a pity that the LMS didn't let the Compound out first so that it could have broken the record twice within minutes! :)

ref the other tender has it been converted to a normal one i.e. to take coal and water or is it in original water carrier mode?

When Bittern ran as DONZ it definitely had some outings with two tenders...the 2nd as a water carrier.

She also ran as 60019 with two tenders. Iwas on the Coronation couple yrs ago-19KX-ED-KX and GB4 19 KX-York. 2 tenders seemed to ffer no advantage at all from a passenger perspective we still spent the time looped as if we were watering, I assume for pathing.

Having worked for the last week on that diagram with the artist, we really tried to get it right - an amazing piece of work when you consider he was only commissioned to do it last Friday.

Anthony, apologies - it wasn't meant in that way... merely meant as a humorous comment following the pages of livery debates in the pages before this one!

Perhaps one of these: ;) at the end would've made the difference!

    James

EDIT: And actually, I think the diagram looks really rather smashing...

No need to apologise James, I got your humour completely - believe me, when dealing with this engine and all the comments, one needs to be able to take a step back and smile!

I merely meant to comment that John Lawson deserves highest credit for working to get it right with no prior knowledge of a steam loco at all, but a technical illustrator. I was impressed with his comment on our first chat "so the loco has three engines then" and knew he'd do well. He confessed to me that it's pretty much a months' work done in a week!

As for the colour and all those who think it's had too much exposure or are bored with it - I personally (work hat off) think that anything that portrays steam heritage in a positive light and gets air space on national media is a good thing (whatever colour it is). And I'm not an LNER/BR/A3 devotee. Just a steam enthusiast.

And I'll add a further complaint. The trip was historic, not historical.

Logically history starts yesterday, so therefore the trip is now historical, but don't we need the verdict of future historians to decide whether it was in fact historic?

Agree with last paragraph, there have been a few occassions when the media latched on to railway heritage in a sensible way, Rocket 150 was the one when, for the first time that I can remember being a railway enthusiast became respectable. The second was the completion of Tornado and now FS.

Please note the yellow gate in the corridor. I saw Bittern when it visited Stratford u Avon. Turning is achieved using the triangle at Hatton. Sighting round single tender is difficult - two tenders a bit dodgy. The solution was for a rider to sit in the corridor, with the yellow gate for safety, and comunicate by radio with the footplate. Thanfully for the rider it was a warm and dry day

In the days of the twin tendered 4472 they used to attach a goods brake van, not to many of them available now!
