NRM don't think scotsman will be ready until autumn, remember she's only just been lifted and there's still lots to do other than the frame cracks. Probably one of Riley's black 5s cos i know 5407 has had a washout

ok ta, i thought it was a bit early, why would the black 5 be going to the NRM though?. my initial thought was 5972 with the headcode being 5Z72, interestingly though the HC from castleton to carnforth is 0Z72.

45407 is in Scotland on the 29th.......it could be his other B5 having returned from Scoland and going as back up for the SSE? I too, doubt it will be FS. Just checked UK Steam, both his fives on the Jacobite, so it can't be as I previously stated............the mystery deepens.....

The Scarborough runs start 19th July, when were the times booked, Maybe there was originally plans For 4472 to have a test run, but now cancelled due to the cracked hornblocks?

Perhaps the path has been booked because it needs to be planned in advance, and it was arranged before the hornblock problem with 4472 arose? Just because there's a schedule in the system doesn't mean it has to be used.

Star Trek nerd head on - actually, he smiles quite broadly in the pilot, becuase they hadn't worked out the lack of humour as a Vulcan characteristic at that point!

Sorry! Star Trek nerd head off!

Come on Alex, don't have a "tabloid moment", the frames are not cracked, they will have been at some stage in the past but at the present they are fine. Cracking of horn blocks is the issue and if IR reports that the issue is becoming more common then watch out for it on any engine you might be involved with. Don't want to pick you up on this, so to speak, but there has been so much garbage posted about this engine we don't need any more triggers for the mischief makers.

The earliest horn guides would have been cast iron but what is the material history for these components? The reason I ask is that the NER S3/B16 class had cast steel horn blocks when introduced and this was a point worthy of comment in the Institution papers so I would like more information - and so far the net has been quite useless. Thanks in advance.

Reading in SR about the latest problems with 4472, it occured to me that the recent repaint into black was rather appropriate.
The loco seems to have become a bit of a black hole for money in recent years.

Why were the frames tested when the airbrake system was put in? Did they suspect a problem? Surely that should have been done before everything has been put back together. Has this question been asked of the NRM team working on the locomotive.
For the price it will cost by the time it comes back onto the mainline, they could have built a brand new one. (only my opinion)

You could say exactly the same of the Vulcan: requiring vast sums of money to keep its air worthiness certificate. Why do people give money to these financial black holes? Because they want to, it stirs something in them and in other people too.

I wish people would give the NRM a break. They have been honest, hard working individuals who have told us everything about this overhaul, effectively. That is to be applauded, not derided when something goes wrong.

Fingers crossed it all gets sorted sooner, rather than later.

.. but the NRM's job is to conserve/restore to near-original condition. They don't have as many options as a private owner who could modify/bodge to make it work.

The frames would have been checked well before the airbrake system was refitted. There was some distortion to be removed and they would have been checked for defects since many classes suffer from frame fractures and the issues have some history and are well known. Hornblock fatigue is viewed as much more recent and is becoming more common, it is an area that appears to quite recently become an area of concern and might be so new that it is only just becoming common knowledge.
As to cost, the heaviest overhaul carried out in preservation was never going to be cheap, but in a very few years it will look just that because costs are going to continue to increase possibly at an alarming rate. So stop moaning and get worrying

Could this "new" problem be due to rust forming between the frame and the hornblock? Rust is a powerful animal.
