Why not? They may be the 'London Games' but don't forget that we are all paying for them and that includes Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Regarding the Olympic Flame, the precise details of the route of the Torch Relay around Britain is being announced next week.

I understand that 46115 (or whatever carries the flame from York) will not be the only steam train to be carrying the Torch during the tour.

Bearing in mind the work that has gone on on 4472 it should not come as any great surprise to find that some components cannot be made to fit correctly and are indeed fundamentally life expired. I suspect this problem is down to the horn stay replacement - 0.030" of slack in these is felt to be sufficient to give rise to frame cracks. If the originals are no longer up to the job then getting them replaced is the only move - pity self adjusting wedges cannot be fitted while they are about it, and maybe Bellville washers to keep the clamping forces constant.

    Since when????????????????

It's us poor soles within the confines of the M25 that are paying for the games through our council tax - they maybe touting the event as a 'games for the country', But it is London pay for it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyway to get back on topic, I just find it rather odd that parts are being found to have failed/worn out as they are being put back together, not whilst they were being removed!

But look at whats been changed since the parts were removed the frames are probally back to true now, hence why parts will not fit at least its now being done and done properly , In hindsight, yes it would have been better to have contracted riley's to do the full overhaul, but how many fore saw the issues, remember before this , people often thought that the engine was being properly looked after, and it was only once york started to examine it did the truth come out about just how bad she was, York have carried out overhauls before with no issues, its because 4472 was in so bad a state that questions are being asked, i suspect that it was really beyond Yorks capability , but saying that, it would have been a big ask for any workshop to overhaul

Excuse me if I'm wrong, but could it be that Britannia isn't registered for operations with WCRC? I remember it went out on test with them last year but I'm unsure as to whether she has actually hauled a tour under their operation?

If I'm correct, that could be the key factor. NRM had gotten in line with WCRC and formally announced they were going to build a partnership with them, with any loco moves/tour etc.. all being handled by the Carnforth based business. If so, the "Olympic Flame Train" would have been due to be operated by WCRC, and I suspect such a run as this would have been in the planning for quite a while now, so too late to turn round and ask DBS to operate on the case that 'an engine with a more appropriate name' be available?

However, if I'm wrong about WCRC and Britannia business, then the above become pretty useless :p

70000 has ran with wcrc in the past. Her first light test run was WCRC ran. I think it's safe to say that Hosking is happy with DBS and WCRC running his trains.

If this is the horn stays being remade, it's a pity they can't be made to attach to the frame as well as the hornblocks, in the way the A4 hornstays are fitted (according to the RCTS Locomotives of the LNER book)

As its on your doorstep, you should pay for it!!!, i would not travel 300 miles to watch any of it , the waste of money is gob smacking, and the security costs.....

However, do you need some water to fill the olympic pool?????

    Got plenty up here!!!!!

Good point, at this rate the boiler certificate will be expired before the chassis is ready!

Olympics? Should be in Greece, any country wishing to send a team to compete pays an annual sum to maintain and develop the facilities. There would have to be an agreed IOC formula so that countries that were not so well off would not be excluded. Who in their right minds wants to watch a gang of professional drug users run round and round in approximate circles engaged in activity that is of no benefit to any other human being whatsoever?

Back to the A3, the horn stays fitted to the A4 were instrumental in offering a much improved frame structure. But you enter a strange realm here, what I would like fitted would be easily removed and would not leave a trace changing the nature of the design of the stay interlock would indeed leave a trace. It depends where you draw the line.

The only thing that interests me, is will we ever know the final cost of the overhaul?

When (if) they finish it I think a question submitted under the freedom of information act may be worthwhile.

Won't they just get it re certified as and when?...............................

(BTW no offence taken & I agree with 242A1 says about it being an absolutely pointless exercise!)
