If you had the know how on coding and or using website desing software ....

Would it work out to be about the same price as a pro acount on say fotopic or flickr or any other photoing website to actully create your own domain and eveything ?

Or would the costs out weight anything you can get on a normal pro acount on a photo website?

A mate of mine runs a site that works out about £50 a year i think, its a .co.uk domain so it does work out about the same price,i could try to make my own site,i have no copy of Dreamweaver to do it though...

See my topic at viewtopic.php?f=49&t=17567 no coding required, and very minimal cost.

    all the rest at,

I also make copies of all the stuff I want to keep so have dics with everything on.Have been caught out before so started doing this a few years ago.Trouble with fotopic I found people posted all the shots they took on a days outing not just one or two good ones.On flickr you post just a couple of the best you have taken you get feedback which I find always helpful.
Try it you will not be disappointed. Simon.

Very annoyed by this! Lost all of my originals a while ago as my dad 'accidentally' lost about 5000 photos. Although I have most of the better ones saved the loss of all of my photos pre August 2007 is annoying. I have a flickr page and my own site so it's not too bad I suppose. This can only be a major loss for everyone though, fotopic was such an easy and useful tool though!

    Ah well worse things happen!

I use webshots as a storage system ( although I do have hard copies) and flickr to show them off.

Does anyone really know what has happened at Fotopic or Snappy Designs? We were told yesterday that it was a technical problem with their computers and things. If this is the case, then surely, computer repair man will eventually fix it and all will be well again.

If that is not the case, what happens to all our pictures? If the company goes out of business, won't all our pictures still be on their computers, even if we can't see them? In which case, could / would not somebody else take them over and make them available again?

Having spent three years posting some 5,500 pictures to Fotopic, it is a somewhat daunting prospect to have to start all over again on another site, beit Flickr or anywhere else. I'm not even sure that I could face it; perhaps I'll take up tiddley-winks instead!

    Slightly off-topic .... sorry!
The problem with people posting ALL the shots they took, not only on a day's outing, but even of one single train passing them by, is in no way limited to Fotopic. Witness, for example, the person who repeatedly insists on posting, elsewhere here on Nat Pres, ALL of his shots he takes machine-gun fashion of steam specials from an identical position from the platforms of a certain station somewhere east of Huddersfield (whose name begins with 'D')!
The results are tedious, monotonous and totally unnecessary.
Yes, with the advent of digital imagery, we all take more than one shot (just in case the clag drifts down, or the driver opens the taps, or the sun goes in), but most of us usually select the best and discard the rest. NOT this guy, however ... and, sadly, he is far from the only one!
Surely he, and those of similar ilk, must eventually come to realise that of those who actually DO post the best pictures (I am not one), NONE of these submit more than one taken at each location and if they do manage to take the occasional 'eminently forgettable' crap shot, (we ALL do from time to time), they tend NOT to impose these upon the rest of us!
I emphasise that in saying all of the aforesaid I am in no way attempting to discourage the currently less proficient (I was going to say 'talented') amongst us, but that, as 'Simon' asserts above, if these people DO wish to receive constructive criticism and encouragement to assist them, they should consider exercising a little more restraint in what they actually do submit.

well i got this from fotopic Facebook group.

    his is a copy of the email that Joel has just sent me;

hi richard, i'm on my phone so sorry for the short reply. Me and nicky sold fotopic in may but to the best of my knowledge it's not gone bust - i understand there is a tech fault ar the moment tho with a fix eta of sometime tonight. I've already asked the snappy designs guys to put an announcement somewhere.

So no, not bust, but a tech fault.

it was ment to be back on-line yesterday.

    getting tab bit worried.......
    so it is Tech fault
    but define Tech fault..

    getting tad bit worried..

ive already started making collections in files on the comp in case of the worst.

i had a look at flickr don't like it....

the thing is with fotopic it was great for research etc.
because LOADS of Railway folk used the site....so anything ya needed was on there.
There is a great deal of priceless photos on there.......i just hope the Fault is not a "biggin"

I just did an Internet search and found this on another (non-railway) forum :

    Hi all --

Apols for the late response, I've only just been told about this group.

Firstly, Nicky and I sold Fotopic.net in May 2008 (to a company called Snappy Designs Ltd which is part of ANY-Web Group), so please take it as read that we've got limited visibility on what's going on right now, and this is based on what I've managed to glean from the new owners.

Now, some details: I got a phone-call that Fotopic had disappeared this morning. Since then I've been trying to find out what's going on, and it turns out that Kingston Comms had dropped Fotopic from its route-map owing to a system fault; I understand it will be back as soon as they inject it back into the global route, and things will be back to normal.

Snappy is reportedly solvent and while I can't see any accounts I've no reason to believe this isn't the case. I'd suggest that once the site is back, you drop an email to orders@fotopic.net or help@fotopic.net if there's issues with Printshop payments.

Finally, I'm keeping a pretty close eye on this but there's not much I can do while it's offline. When it's injected back into the route-map, it'll be visible within 5-10 minutes for the UK but the rest of the world may take a bit longer. Basically, hang on there, it's not gone bust but it might be day before it returns; as an old friend of mine said "one day this will all be an anecdote".

    Best wishes

    Joel

Not wishing to pick on a particular individual, I can appreciate what you are saying. Sometimes I will upload two similar pics, if they have have individual merits and I cannot decide which one is best, but the uploading of loads of images of the same train getting slightly closer is irrating and I tend to not revisit such sites.

Personally i think it very foolish to load your pictures onto the net or indeed just leave them only on your hard drive, all it takes is the said website to go offline (as has happened) or your computer to get a virus and bang all your pictures are gone for good, the most prudent thing to is to forget going out to buy any snazzy photting equipment first and get some blank CD's as back up.

As for Fotopic, well the start of January is generally quiet anyway so i can afford to wait a while first to see if it is indeed a glitch, in the worst case i'll have to look into some alternatives, rather glad i didn't shut my old Yahoo groups when i started on Fotopic, though admittedly the sizing on phots on there is rather rubbish.

Where Fotopic came into it's own for me was the search facility, loads of railway phots on one site where you could search for s specific subject was very handy, is any other phot site capable of that to such perfection ?.

That is good to hear, look forward to uploading some shots tonight. I must say,it depends what you mean by "everything" Simon,i post 40-50 shots a gallery sometimes,i prefer to be a "record/image" photographer,if the opportunity to take a great phot is there and i have time to set the shutter speed etc i will, but when i'm on a railtour it can be quite difficult, especially if on a crowded platform, that is the only reason why i post so man, just my 2 pence worth,i take 100-200+ photos on most tours so i narrow it down quite a bit........
I have copies of my shots on Photobucket (some of my best),fotopic (my best and my "Record" shots of special events),PC and External Hard Drive (Both everything). Flickr i would have used and it would have just been image shots really for me also, not record shots.....

    Cheers,
    Mark
