    That is indeed what was meant, so apologies if it didn't read that way.

    Biased as I am, I cannot claim that the Stanier version was a better machine than George Hughes'. It possibly rode better: the Horwich Crabs' big cylinders tended to throw the trailing end around, giving a pronounced sideways movement when working hard. This is one theory for the Crab nickname.

    Mr Hughes was pleasantly surprised to discover that St Rollox had nearly completed the drawings for a fine 2-6-0, but it was soon shown that it would not fit the loading gauges of most lines south of Carlisle, and it followed Caley practice of substantial parts and fittings, so was also very overweight. He abandoned that idea and ordered the Horwich DO to start from scratch, based on existing L&YR practice.
