One only has to look at the present plight of a number of steam ships to see how things can go wrong when the owner passes away or can no longer look after their vessel. Coming from railway preservation to steam ship preservation, I am often appalled by the apathy to vessels in distress - people will indeed look on from the sidelines and let them deteriorate beyond saving. There are more than the 2 ships mentioned in this month's Steam railway in this predicament.

In a small number of cases thoughts are to set up a Trust with the deceased owner's family as Trustees as well as 'new blood' with relevant skills and hopefully money.

At a slight tangent, but what about the existing and proposed new builds? I presume that most are under the stewradship of a Trust and that should offer protection?

Only up to the point when the trust runs out of money. Then what happens? Ultimately all projects need to generate enough supporters and money to carry on, regardless of ownership.

Its easy to attract the young, just give them opportunities, make them feel part of the organization, and let them fill a role in the organization they'd enjoy filling and excel in it. Teach them and give them the chances to prove themselves, and let them have some of the fun, you have enjoyed. You do that and your future is secure. Its the over use of rules, road blockers, and squabbling, that the youth doesn't want to be a part of. Remember, your competing with girls, cars, cellphones, xbox, TV, wii, and the internet. You have to beat all that out, to keep their involvement. The owner of 6233 or the Midland railway center, whoever is responsible, is doing something right. See link below
