Can someone tell me how this picture was taken without standing in the four foot?

That looks pretty black to me! There is a couple in that collection where a bit of red shows through but looks quite impressive!

Out of interest, how easy is it to them clean down the loco having 'weathered' it in this way?

Hurricane, that was taken in the four foot ! As someone who dosnt do charters but I have a few friends that do they say its similer to an enginners possesion and basically they have freedom of the line so if they want to stop at point x for runpasts they can do so for as long as they want without fear of anything else coming along. In the last couple of issues of Steam Railway theres a couple of nice Photos of 7812 on a charter at the SVR clearly taken from the wrong side of the fence but its the same sort of principle.

Thanks for the reply, I see hadn't occurred to me that it was a photo from a charter, I thought it was from the gala!

TBH I cant work out if these photos are a good thing or set a bad precedent?

I know what you mean, I'd to think that most of us are sensible enough to know that those photos were taken in a controlled situation under supervision. However it just takes 1 idiot who thinks an orange hi viz makes him indestructible... Cracking phots though I have to say!

Charters are run in controlled circumstances with a focus on safety

Now of course the risk is someone tries to copy the scene on a running day , but no one would be that silly now would they

Oh. Iain. You have excelled yourself with this one. How have you made it look black with nothing more than poster paint?

Going a bit OT, this clip has featured on another forum where a driver stated that it wasn't close enough to the running line to warrant reporting it as a "near miss'.

Maybe I'm a bit odd but I love that weathered look. I'm not old enough to have seen BR era steam, so to see present day quality images of steam locos looking like workhorses is pretty cool.

How do you get a copy of the WTT if you've pre-booked your ticket? I've been told they are issued with day rovers bought on-the-day, but no-one answered my e-mail asking is this the same for advance tickets?

Your far from odd, it's as good a representation of the run down of the 60's as we are ever likely to get, you don't have to remember a period to appreciate the effort to try and get it right.

Agreed, and us old 'uns who remember it well, enjoy reliving our teens (in mind only)!
