Now funnily enough, someone in the Hornby Railway Collectors Association is thinking of modifying a Hornby-Dublo 0-6-2T into one of those :) He's even considered the Sturrock/Avonside 0-8-0T... https://www.gnrsociety.com/locomotive-class/avonside-0-8-0-tank-engines/

The LCDR, who were quite closely allied to the GNR by virtue of a shared connections over the Metropolitan widened lines, ordered a pair of similar locos on seeing the GNR ones. Sadly, the GNR ones then proved unsuitable in traffic on the very tight curves and were sent elsewhere, leaving the LCDR to rapidly cancel their order. The correspondence with Avonside went on for some years afterwards trying to get compensation for the work done up to cancellation.

The team at the NNR reassembling 1744 have put out an appeal for detail photos of the inside of the cab interior. The team members who dismantled it seven years ago have since left us and therefore we don’t have access to any photos they took during dismantling. Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks
    Steve

You've probably already looked in the usual places for what's already out there, but there are a few floating around online. (Credit to loose_grip_99 on Flickr for this one)

That has backhead clacks with shutoff valves similar to the hunslets austerity...does anyone know why you would have them (the shutoffs) on a loco like this?

Edit because originally I thought you just meant the combined steam valves, but see what you mean, not just the dual steam valve clack assy. So I guess no, I don't know.

Gotcha, there certainly aren't that many still images around of the lower cab. There are a few Youtube clips showing footplate rides ,which yield some stills like this one. They're not the sharpest though.[IMG]

It was fairly standard LNER practice.

Do you close them at the end of each day?

On some locos, yes, and others, no. It tends to be the older ones that get shut on the NYMR but the critical factor is how much they are passing at the clack valve. These days those on the NYMR are pretty good so it is more habit than necessity.
