Several locos had specific parts 'marked up' by various groups as spares for their locos when it was expected that many of remaining locos would be cut up. Ray

Googled 34053 in Barry and came across a good photo of said slidebar. Don't know the year, but there was no writing on it. Rust patches were on it, so if something had been written on, the slidebar would have to have been polished first. Unlikely, methinks.

So maybe the theory that it was painted on by BR before it went to Barry is the correct one, then?

Twisting my post, aren't you? How about quoting the complete post.

It is not the L/H lower slide bar it had in Barry. That is now on 34046,which had lost its counterpart prior to restoration.

I habitually trim inclusions to show just the part I'm replying to, because when replying to a long post (just like to a long email), the extraneous material just gets in the way. Once started on the habit, one tends to apply it everywhere - to short, as well as long.

There is no hidden meaning there.

Any idea of the source of the current one (with the 'ghost' writing)?
