http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwAjP7AN6yo -- This is the other one that shows 2860 leaving Squamish yard, then leaving town and being sanded out upgrade & finally approaching Porteau Cove running on the new section of paved highway put in for the 2010 Olympics. This is as good as it gets with steam in Western Canada, 2860 being the only mainline steam loco west of the Rockies .

Thanks, that second one is excellent, and the last bit coming along what looks like a dual carriageway.........

The road is actually a third lane at a narrow part of the Sea to Sky highway at Porteau Cove , the railway line was black topped over to provide a reversible extra road lane at this point for Olympic traffic going to and coming from Whistler, because the space between mountain bluff and the sea is narrow, it could not be made into a dual carriage way. This is apparently a temporary fix ! -- They are to station a railway road foreman here to regulate rail traffic at this point -- It carries one train each way a day normally - though during Olympics there may be extra passenger movements .

2860 made a successful trip Monday 8th February to White Rock BC from Vancouver and returned on Tuesday 9th .The train consist was 2860 , BNSF 6422 a GE ES44AC unit , generator car and 4 passenger cars . The train entered the US at Blaine WA and proceeded to Custer where the whole train was turned on the wye , this is the first time in 20 or so years that steam has crossed the border here .

    Cheers Richard

PS -- there are more video's up at You Tube now of this trip

I saw a photo of 2860 in the Heritage Railway Mag -- great that we got some international recognition -- but the caption said we collected the Olympic flame from the US border -this was incorrect -- we did not come close to the flame , the only flame on board was in the firebox to make steam, and for sure it was not Olympic -- just to clarify the facts

For those interested there are a couple of photo's now up at the Facebook page of 2860, showing the center drive wheels being lowered on the VIA Rail's drop table in Vancouver. The page is - 2860 Royal Hudson Fan Club .
There is also a recent report on the work being done .

    Cheers Richard

Latest update as of today 2nd June 2010 -- 2860 was steamed up at the VIA Maintenance Center in Vancouver today , this was in preparation for it's trip back to Squamish , a few minor jobs to be done, but we are ready to go as soon as the powers that be say ok .

Good news , 2860 is now back in it's home at Squamish BC, we ran the loco light engine from Vancouver VMC to Squamish via New Westminster and North Vancouver yesterday . This was a positioning move and a test run all together , care was taken to bed in the overhauled axle boxes and a few stops were taken to check on them en route .
The loco will now be on display again for any folks coming over from the Uk .

As the crow flies it's about 45 miles , but the route we took involved back tracking somewhat , so in reality the distance was probably around 65 miles or so .The first part is mainline out of Vancouver , in fact we had to wait for Amtrak to arrive before we set off , the route is secondary after North Vancouver , but even so we also were side tracked for the southbound Whistler Mountaineer passenger at Porteau Cove. Yes all went well , no problems cropped up as far I know, the engineer & fireman had smiles on their faces when we were shutting her down , so that speaks volumes .-- thanks for the interest

Is there still an excursion from North Vancouver to Squamish - or has that passed into legend now - (and is the Ship of the Seven Seas still doing those seafood banquets at North Vancouver!?)

Yes the excursion to Squamish went by the board back in 2002- the only steam excursion now is when we take 2860 out on special occasions . Talk of a trip out later in the year but nothing for sure yet . You can always ride the Whistler Mountaineer trip daily - but it's a bit more high end and aimed at the tourist market - but worth the time if you can do it .
regards the Seven Seas - went there way back in the 80's -- not sure if it survives - think it also may have gone away - haven't heard it advertised in a while .
    cheers Richard

2860 steamed up for the opening of the the new semi roundhouse and turntable at Squamish on 30th June 2010 . She didn't go very far , mainly steamed for guests to see and photograph. She will be inside the new roundhouse for at least a couple of weeks, pictures and video up on the Facebook page -- 2860 Royal Hudson Fan Club .
