    Sums the day up very well Al. Pity about the crap operating York to Newcastle though. I am very concerned that WCR and 60009 will be blamed for the delay minutes to the 1152 Man Picc to NC and I am going to make that point to RCT in the hope that they can pass it on.

    Just noticed that RTT shows we arrived at York at 1822 from Newcastle. In fact we arrived 8 early at 1804. If the signallers had let us run fast line we would have been in at about 1753, 5 minutes ahead of the ED-KX.

    Didn't sound like it was trundling along to me ,heard her coming for sometime. With a clean boiler and half to three quarters of a glass of water (,as per all of the manuals) no priming would take place. Its been a day or two since I saw water coming out of the safety valves in that quantity ,the boiler must have been nearly solid with water.

    Speed was around 50 mph and accelerating only slowly. That's what I call trundling compared with what A4s can do up Stoke, even on the slow line. Priming will prevent the steam being used efficiently.

    This would be a really neat segue into a new thread for UKRT’s “Bittern Farewell” (30th December 2014). If I knew how to create a new thread, I’d rise to this one. But as a Novice Contributor to NatPres, I don’t. Maybe somebody could help out…..

    Latest indications from UKRT are that, with some eight weeks to go, this tour is virtually sold out. As one of the highest profile main line locomotive retirements scheduled over the next twelve months, it seems likely that this tour will attract phenomenal lineside interest as well, as hinted by Mr K’s post. So now is probably as good a time as any to get the ball rolling with a new thread and to start rounding up initial observations and thoughts about this trip.

    Have looked again at the log of this trip and despite the usual pathing spoilers there were some good bits. The dash down from Stoke where we ran continously at 75 or thereabouts for 15 minutes was great especially the 'taking' of Grantham and Newark at speed. On the return, the climb up to Ferryhill was a good demonstration that A4s can 'do' hills and I also enjoyed the obligatory flash across the Tees at Croft.

    Another example of RTC/WC doing the right thing for enthusiasts when it matters.

    Yes Al there were some good bits. For the full story see the next issue of Heritage Railway out on 20th November.

    RTC stuck to the plan and WCR carried it out despite some pretty inept operating.
