If you stay in the Black Forest in Germany you are given a free guest card that gives you free travel on trains, buses and trams - e.g. extensive Freiberg strassenbahn, in the entire area during your stay, this includes 2 of the best railways in Germany the Schwardwaldbahn and the Hollentalbahn, you can also access various steam lines at the weekends, the value of this can easily exceed your accomodation costs.

Good point, it's worth knowing this happens in several places in Germany.
Also If you stay at the Deutsche bahn owned intercity hotels, these also come with a regional bahn travel card valid for the duration of your stay...with the added benefit that some are actually located in the station, the one at Berlin ost bahhof has platform level views of the station, but when the window is shut..is very quiet at night.
