A slightly strange train of thought via Tangmere, Goodrington Bank, a 42xx and tug of war, leads to a question (which may not be strictly appropriate to this thread but may pass some time whilst we wait for some good news!). If there was to be a hypothetical inter region tug of war, you'd expect the GWR to send in something out of the 28XX, 42XX, 72XX or maybe 47XX classes - probably one of the tanks as the weight of water over the wheels would help, or a 28xx if it had to be a tender loco. So what would the Southern turn out both for the tank engine "class" and the tender engine "class". Maybe its just brain fade but whilst I can think of lots of graceful Southern "race horses", I'm struggling to think of the low end grunt locos to compare to the heavy haul locos elsewhere. I guess without much in the way of mineral traffic maybe they had less need of them.

(NB I'm not particularly interested in which "team" would win - more learning a bit more about Southern goods locos)

Inferiority complex? Not me mate. They may be above us in the table but the last two meetings between have seen the Gooners collect "nul points." :)

The Maunsell Z Class 0-8-0T may fit your bill or the Urie G16 4-8-0T perhaps.

The SR never really needed the heavyweight mineral lugging locos that the other big 4 companies did, trains from its only coalfield were usually hauled by 0-6-0 or 2-6-0 locos. Probably one of its more onerous turns would have been the Meldon Quarry ballast workings which were handled by the S15 4-6-0s east of Exeter. Incidentally I saw recently a photo of a well loaded ballast train, at least 8 bogie hoppers, at Okehampton, headed by a T9 4-4-0! I presume that it would only have taken the train as far as Exeter St Davids?

Or a Urie H16 4-6-2T, which along with the G16 was an absolute beast. Maybe recreate a Maunsell W class 2-6-4T as a deputy? I've read that they rode like a horse-drawn cart without suspension, but were quite good sloggers.

Wonder if they will be subject to new builds in the future?

if your taking rebuilds the only one that is feasable would be an H16 because you have a spare set of frames ala 825 and the spare boiler that the Urie lads have weither it would be a match for a 42xx would have to be seen, Southern did not have a need for an all out heavy freight loco even the S15's were pressed into passinger use from time to time

Be patient Jane. This will get back to 34067 as soon as something positive is known.

Cannot see such a move happening for a few weeks now as Tangmere has no booked work until 19 March, RTC's Bath & Bristol.

Would have had some fun up the bank to Central if not, although I can think of a couple of Enginemen who would give it a damn good go.

I think Bryan it was more of a hint to get back onto the topic of Tangmere rather than just general rabble....

I know. But I thought a gentle and polite response to Jane would bring us all back on topic.

    For now at least! LOL!
