Not wishing to provoke an argument, all I will say is that I am certainly not the only person on the forum who does not use their real name. Their is no real reason in my case, just the way it happened. I have nothing to hide & my real name is Brendon. By the way my user name reflects what I did for 45 years, maintain & repair buses. So I do have an engineering background, if not in railways.

How many more posters from the active preservationists, who can actually give members of this forum the FACTS not meaningless speculation, are some nat. pres. members going to hack off? The way this forum is headed is to be only a source for pointless speculation and drivel with no information of consequence.

Please bear in mind with Steamtown that they are running a commercial operation, not playing trains.

It would be a shame to lose a knowledgable source of information because of the attitude of one or two people ... I hope you will reconsider.
Unless I have missed something obvious, I am unaware of any "rude & abrupt" statements from JS recently to justify the original comment.

This forum has lost valuable input before thanks to the brain not in gear when typing, brigade, so buseng, if James does decide not to bother posting his useful snippets again, it will be on your head.

To quote a phrase : Mr Shuttleworth has provided you with a perfect Parliamentary answer - brief, to the point - and tells you nothing which you didn't already know.

JS is a regular reader like many involved in the day to day running of main line steam albeit as part of his much larger job. He is known to be annoyed by idle speculation and lineside rumour but - when it is necessary - he is willing to inform on reasons why things do - or do not happen. His contributions are few hence more especially valued and it ill behoves critics to complain about rudeness when he provides the necessary information or civility when he provides brevity.

Be grateful for what you have - your impertinence in seeking more could result in you receiving less.

James, I hope you will continue to post. Yes some people get on high horses here for little reason, but we're not all like that.

(And if you were ever to consider a regular "Carnforth Update" slot then you'd have most of the active forum members eating out of your hand........ )

To understand a reply you have to consider the person and the circumstances.

Somone who works for a living with limited time comes on here and makes simple direct replies. No time for eloquent language.

Then you have people who come on here to relax, view things, chew things over and can spend they time they want on writing a reply (though sometimes not really think it through before they hit the 'send' button )

Each one has it's own merits. The secret of good communication is clarity.

I too think that I may have to go out and get some shots of Tangmere. Does anyone know if she has been repainted completely?

I believe Mr Shuttleworth's comment was ended with an exclamation mark, so while it may have been short and to the point certainly no offence was intended. I too welcome his posts on here, he provides some clarity in some of the more bizarre statements that get thrown around the place and he is certainly a voice of reason. There seems to be an a little bit of an unsavoury attitude creeping into some of the posts on here at the moment, not something which I come on here to experience and certainly wasn't about when I first joined, Nat pres was a very friendly, informative and welcoming place back then. Not a place where back biting, bitchiness and threats of law suits abounded; some of the comments posted on the RTC thread for example have left me staggered. They don't encourage me to post let alone those who are actually involved in the thick of it, I hope this trend can be reversed...
Back on topic I look forward to Tangmere's return and I hope it doesn't jutr restrict it's operations to the south as before, would be nice to get some unrebuilt action if the recessions allows.

To echo the sentiment above of Adrian Parker and Alan Corbett, perhaps not everyone realises just how "from the horse's mouth" is information from Mr Shuttleworth. I am sure he is a busy man in his professional capacity, so his postings here, however brief, are most welcome.

I too would love to know when Carnforth will get round to progressing the overhaul of "Galatea", but I am sure that it will get sorted eventually, and am happy to wait. We are after all bystanders, and West Coast have a business to run.

From the snippets on Youtube, it looks something like a full repaint, but you can't see the wheels nor is there a clear view of the tender. The definitive answer will present itself either officially, during the mainline trials or on the first booked railtour.

Any accurate news is always welcomed. Especially about Tangmere, clearly a very popular loco. I shall be buying tickets to travel behind her as soon as she is reliably back in service. As will a number of other of my close friends and asscociates.

So it must be remembered that anyone who belongs to/is empoyed by any organisation that is invloved in "our" steam loco hobby is addressing many of their customers and potential cutomers here on Nat Pres. And often Nat Pres is the only place where such information can easily be supplied to a core part of the customer base.

So, IMHO, that information should be provided in the same manner as it would be given in any other communication and/or advertising media. Politely, accurately and without the threat of the information source being ended.

    Quite so Bryan.

As has been said before many times on here, WCR are a business and are entitled to say or not say what they want about their operation. However, a major part of their business is supplying the very product that many on here support directly or indirectly and maybe a little more openness, as with Rileys, Tyseley etc, would win them more friends than enemies and hence perhaps customers - and at the same time stop much of the speculation/rumours that eventually seems to upset them. For example, JS could just as easily have said something like 'unfortunately Galatea is not ready and is unlikely to be so for some time, however WCR will try and keep those interested on progress as and when it occurs'
