I think, and I may be wrong (I often am) that the camera used to shoot this clip has an automatic sound recording volume control, and each time the drain cock
opened the volume dropped making one exhaust beat less audible than the others. But I could be wrong:)

46115 sounded on the money yesterday climbing through Bentham, Whalley and past Fylde Junction. No video this time, you'll have to take my word for it ;)

You are right about automatic recording levels they do affect recordings and make things sound strange, I personally never use it I always record on manual.
ARL boosts low sound levels and attenuates high levels ie safety valves and whistles, in a stereo recording it spoils the gradual increase and corresponding decrease as a train approaches and then passes by on it's way.
When recording trains closer than I normally do I will change to dynamic mikes (Beyerdynamic M69's) as they are less sensitive than condenser mikes.

    Cheers Dave

I hear that 46115 may well do a test run tomorrow, weather and other things permitting. WCML recently closed north of Preston due to high winds.

Early departure from Hellifield meant that Horrocksford could release it before the passenger train hence the early times throughout.

Nice picture - apart from the overhead, a very 'Scot in the sixties' view. Hopefully we shall see a lot more of her this year.

I think the 'Scot in the 60s' can be applied to the other shots as well Peter, all the usual high class from the usual contributors. Well done all...
