    it was facing the right way through Virginia Water, 20 mins early, so 45 mph was clearly a bit of a miscalculation!

    And even if it was chimney first all the way, light engines are normally timed at 45mph due to not having as much braking force as with a full train behind them.

    Was there a DL pilot today? Very surprised (and pleased) if not.

    No, most engine and coach moves are timed at 60mph unless tender first running is involved. Braking is not normally an issue with steam engines which have good brakes (unlike diesels)..
