Yes 35003 produced the most 100 mph runs in in 1967 but Clan Line probably did the best one on 12th December 1966 as it had a decent load

The negativity only comes from a small section of people, those enthusiasts who feel that they are in a position to insist that the finished restoration is to their satisfaction.
However. the Joe Publics, who makes up the majority of fare paying passengers, probably have no idea what colour a particular engine should be, and they don't care, they want a steam engine on the front than looks the part and makes all the right noises and smells, and that's what they get.
Yesterdays 11 coaches full of passengers, approx 430, is proof of this, as is the fact that the York start Dalesmans have been doubled up, to cope with the demand, and each one will be the same sized train, and likely to be hauled by the 8F from Hellifield.
The more that the critics moan, the more Mr Smith is going to take pleasure from irritating them even more.

I'd consider myself in the "disappointed" category, not "negative" - it's WCRC's disrespect to their loco's historic significance that generates that disappointment. I don't expect WCRC to act any different than the NRM in the way they present their loco's. Both organisations target Joe Public, so the argument that they can have anything as long as its steam doesn't wash with me I'm afraid.

That's just my opinion of it of course :Wideyed:

Ian, I respect your opinion, but why should a privately owned company act the same as a nationally funded museum. The former are in business to repair and run steam and diesels engines for profit, the latter are as the name says a National Rail Museum, a state funded, none profit organisation whose job it is to preserve items of historic significance.

That's just the way I feel about the way any steam locomotive is treated. Whether it's the NRM, a heritage railway or a mainline operation, whoever is the owner, is merely the carer. There's a duty to perform in owning a historic steam locomotive.

A duty to who, or do what with it? It's like the people who disagree with No 9 becoming static at Mr Camerons place. It's his to do as he wishes with it the same as Mr Smith can do with his locos. I'm sure when they were purchased there were no stipulations made like it must be restored to working order or painted in x y or z livery.

Mr Smith must be chuckling, if he reads these posts criticising the livery. Who says it's staying in this livery anyway?

But for a few cans of black paint, there's been no loss of business to WCR and they've gained lots of free coverage instead.

Authenticity and openess should matter more to them REGARDLESS. I think a Hetty Wainthropp investigation would reveal a lot about them.

I think if you need to ask that question, you miss an important part of the heritage / preservation movement that so many people spend a massive amount of time perfecting. It is of course the title of this forum? Not "National, let's buy a steam locomotive and do what we want with it"? :Pompus:

I hesitate to wade into this one but Mr Smith can of course do what he wants with his locos and can chuckle at the reaction on Nat Pres if he reads it. It might be nice though if occasionally there could be a bit more info on plans for each loco, perhaps on the WCR website. Accurate information might also be helpful in helping people decide when to book. The latest email I had from WCR states incorrectly that all Dalesman trains use the S&C both ways

It is entirely the choice of the owner what and how he manages his property. Understanding that does not get me any closer to understanding why someone demonstrably so successful in business would be actuated to do something simply to irritate perceived critics who are in all probability unknown to him.
The wider concern is that if it is illustrative of a mindset, how might the attitude impact on other activities of more significance?

There's not only Mr Smith chuckling. :Playful: As I see it WC are not in the preservation business, they are a railway engineering outfit who have locos and stock for hire. And Mr Smith can run his business as he sees fit. The locos and stock are there to make money.

If the steam loco's are regarded as merely assets to aid business growth & profit then why aren't they painted in the WCRC house livery of maroon (ish) as seen on the majority of their diesel fleet? This would aid the corporate image of the company & give extra advertising.............?

By painting the loco's in a 'correct' BR livery albeit not so for a particular loco, to me, smacks a little bit of deliberately antagonising the enthusiast market.

I could actually understand the rationale of a WCRC house livery being applied more than I can the use of the ex BR liveries.

Don't get it but don't lose any sleep over it :Resistanceisfutile:

Maybe if the WCR critics didn't drone on and on about every single little thing they can find to have a pop and whinge, Mr Smith might be more open with his information? If he or his people read Nat Pres, I'm not surprised that they might be 'impish' to wind-up the minority of knockers that infest these pages.

Pretty sure the "impish behaviour" of said individual pre dates NP knockers by some considerable time.
Equally confident that the 'reach' of NP commentary is somewhat overestimated in the minds of a few folk.

Yes, sorry about this folks. I was very kindly given basic info. this morning by text message of her move down (I only had timings for two locations). However, I was out when I received the info and I did try to post a link to the RTT timings which I briefly managed to find before I lost the signal again. I didn't have much luck with the mobile internet which has been poor today and my phone has really not been enjoying the heat today. I couldn't get into it half the time as the touch screen wasn't working. When I tried to take the picture posted earlier I nearly threw the bloody phone in the bin!
Here are a few more pictures from my digital camera of a work stained Bulleid Pacific at Guildford this afternoon: 34052 gford2.JPG
