Last Friday's test runs were 45212's first main line workings since 3 August 1968 when it worked the 1P58 2048 Preston - Blackpool South portion off the 1L79 1705 Euston - Carlisle. This was the penultimate steam-hauled BR passenger service. The very last one left Preston just after 45212 when 45318 hauled the 2125 to Liverpool Exhange. 45212 was bought for preservation on withdrawal and has since been based on the KWVR with occasional visits to other heritage lines.

A couple of fleeting views of 45212 getting a move on, from Friday's loaded test run:

Given today's discovery that 76084 was once a Green Ayre engine, I have to get up early and phot her on the down fast at Lancaster!

.......... 73050 is due to begin an overhaul shortly (if it hasn't already begun) while 48773 and 75027 are out of action with no overhaul planned as yet. ...........

The overhaul of 73050 has indeed started and the first phase of progressing to boiler removal is under way. This will allow assessment of overhaul needs and generations for quotations for the work. There is a website and blog focused at the loco (http://73050.co.uk). Far to early to give completion estimates but 5-6 years are in the frame.

My fault. Mr Martin1656 asked about the status of all the engines which were active in 1968, wondering how many might be available for a big 50 years since the end of steam celebration next year. His question was prompted by the welcome return to the main line of No. 45212, which was last in action on the "big railway" in Augist 1968. I provided an update, as best as I could, on the status of all the locos active in 1968. Mr WorGeordie replied with a more accurate report of 73050, which did remain in service with BR until 1968 (and thus qualified for inclusion in my summary) even though there are no plans to run it on the main line, which is what this thread is all about. So it's a bit of a digression from LE moves on the main line, but not irrelevant from the welcome news that a Black Five with a big "End of BR Steam" connection is now fighting fit and ready to go out on the main line.

    Hope this helps.
