Sorry to be pedantic but this is not a "LE move" - it has a train, in the form of a coach, in tow and is classified as an ECS move. Some enthusiasts get upset by people who use the term "train station" which if you think about it is not an inaccurate description - well this one does not like the inaccurate use of railway terminology by enthusiasts who one might expect to know better. Sorry its my problem, I know, but I'm just saying. Nice picture by the way Shep!

And RTT does have 'Empty Coaching Stock' in it's train description.

I see there is a Locomotive Services diesal loco 'unadvertised express' on realtime tomorrow from Crewe 10.05 to Llandudno and on to Valley. Could 46100 be involved?

Surely all light loco. moves go with a support coach? I can't recall seeing such a move without the coach

It's about the correct terminology Victor. The definition of a light engine is one (or more than one) that is travelling on its own without a train. For identification purposes the first digit of its headcode will be 0 (zero). As you say, most steam loco moves these days include a support coach and will be identified as a class 5 (empty coaching stock) train. So what you normally see could be called an engine move but not a LIGHT engine move. Its pedantic I know, but some of us are like that I'm afraid. Its a cross we have to bear!

If the support coach is conveying the support crew who are not operationally required on the journey, then they must be passengers (albeit not fare paying) , so pedantically should it not be signalled as a passenger train?:)

Support crew are deemed to be staff on duty, not passengers, and will have signed a staff register for that shift. They may be volunteers but, as with heritage railways, they are treated as if they are company staff. However the last two such moves I've seen (last week and today) the only occupant of the coach has been the guard.

Most if not all railtours run as"Unadvertised Express" (Code XU) because they are not advertised in the public timetable/database.
Advertised class 1 trains are shown as Express Passenger (Code XX)
Class 2 passenger trains are coded OO, class 2 staff trains (not advertised to the public) are coded OS. Unadvertised class 2 trains (Football relief trains etc on suburban networks) are coded OU.

It's all laid out somewhere, probably in the Train Planning Rules of Network Rail.

    Cheers, Neil

PS Just to confuse matters, a light engine used to be able to convey up to 2 brakevans and still be regarded as a light engine, class 0.

You are right there Neil, but to clarify, this refers to goods brake vans and not passenger/parcel brakevans. I believe that goods brakes could also be propelled by light engines.

Thanks for the clarification between freight and passenger rated brakes.
Propelling brakevans was normally covered for specific journeys in the Sectional Appendix or signal box local instructions.

    Cheers, Neil

I have filmed at least 3 loco only moves in recent years. 2 involved black 5s moving from Castleton to Carnforth and the third was 5972 from York to Carnforth
