Read somewhere a while ago and now cant remember where ! it was suggested that it is partly at least to help reduce water consumption and thus reduce number of water stops and thus journey times which affects the crewing requirements. Was also suggested that it was more economical cost wise but could not get my head around that one unless the crewing costs are reduced so much by the shorter transit times. Sorry can't vouch for what was written elsewhere!

If you can do the trip in one shift rather than two, then you only need a single crew and so piloting is cheaper. Even if there has to be a crew-change part way, it's still no more expensive with a diesel pilot. Since the diesel can be single-manned, you need the same number of staff (driver on the diesel, competant person but not necessarily a driver, on the steam loco with owner's rep.) and EWS have many more diesel drivers than steam drivers.

Last I heard was that 45231 would run as normal up to Scotland, and 46115 would ( if the rain falls) run up to Scotland to work the return of The Cathedrals Explorer on Tuseday, departing Cadder Yard for Oxenholme. Lets hope it rains!

Although I'm not suggesting you are in any danger please be careful when outside in inclement weather, particularly thunderstorms. I have personal experience of lightning strikes and believe me its scary and can be fatal. Even though the storm may seem some distance away lightning strikes without warning!

Does anyone know if 46201 Princess Elizabeth is still being moved from York NRM to Tyseley today? There haven't been any updates via RailTour Live.

Could they not send 6201 up to Stirling tonight, to relive 45231 if it is true that it has failed?

As I understand it 6201 have a limited support crew and would be pushed to do all the extra miles involved at such short notice.

A friend tells me he heard that Lizzie was quite a bit late at Chesterfield at 1700-ish and hasn't yet passed Duffield. (1740)

    Thanks Wardy.

When I spoke to my friend on the phone, he said to me "I heard it was through Chesterfield about half an hour ago" and this call was at 5:30. We all know timings can easily get altered when up to third hand!

Good shot there at Chesterfield and a bit of exhaust too on a warm day....!)

Is 45231 likely to be fixed before the start of the Jacobite season, or will 61994 has most of the duties for a few weeks, if the engine is going to fixed in time for the SRPS tour on Saturday? If so would anybody know when it would run light to Scotland?
