Railway duties normally require duty to be no more than 12 hours. My driving hours are limited to 10, but the duty can spread over to 16 hours legally. (Provided I get the daily minimum rest between duties of course). My average ROSTERED hours are about 47.5, all at flat time, before any O/T.
When I volunteer at KESR I limit myself to 12 hours, and make sure I have rest of course.

The recommendations of 'Hidden' were essentially aimed at the big railway system to ensure that people doing safety critical work couldn't be rostered for long shifts over long periods without adequate rest, as often happened at that time. It wasn't aimed at occasional volunteering on heritage railways. Whilst there is an obligation under ROGS to avoid situations where fatigue might arise there is no obligation for a heritage railway to comply with the Hidden recommendations. HRA Guidance (endorsed by the ORR) recommend:
    • Shifts not to exceed 12 hrs except in an mergency
    • Minimum break of 12 hrs between shifts
    • Max of 72 hrs in any week
    • No more than 13 consecutive days
Which broadly echo Hidden. However, I would suggest a volunteer doing one 13 hr shift in a week is a lot less fatigue inducing than doing six consecutive 12 hour shifts. Common sense needs to be applied. It should all be contained in the SMS, though.
