They do, but when did you see or hear of an electric locomotive being referred to as a 'motor'?

    In US parlance at times.
Electric train drivers also being referred to as 'motormen'.

Steam powered push/pull trains on the Southern were generally referred to as “motor trains”. ;)

And if you can't decide whether it's a loco or an engine or a carriage or a car,

    Just call it a railmotor.

Just on this - but at heavy general overhauls, the Gresley conjugated motion was treated as one set and as such would be replaced as one set - that's the full outside valve gear and the 2-1 motion .

Info comes from the report on works development in the LNER's board minutes (1941) in the national archives.

It’s interesting that the term, one engine in steam is still with us and never changed to one diesel in oil or one electric in juice

Is it? The KESR Rulebook refers to "One Train Working" and OTW is what I show in the train register.

The KESR has OTW for the Northiam - Bodiam section. If I issue the 'long - section' token for Rolvenden to Northiam because Wittersham Rd is 'switched out', then if Northiam is also 'switched out', under what we call "A" block the section becomes "One Train Working" Rolvenden to Bodiam, with exchange of token for staff at Northiam.

[The signalling at KESR sometimes seems a bit over complicated for our needs, but it does provide flexibility to operate with one or more 'boxes switched out.]

Have the Belmond people ever asked for 35028 to appear with a more resonant/ glamorous name for their trains e.g. Cunard White Star, P&O, United States Lines etc? Clan Line, which I think was largely a cargo line, must be one of the most obscure shipping lines to the general public.

Do any shipping lines really have much public awareness any more?

I think Cunard and P & O (albeit part of Carnival UK) are still up there.

Double Yellow Line? But it would have to have air-smoothed casing and Southern livery, I suppose.

Do you have any evidence that they were any good?
I'd always heard that all of the Caley's own 4-6-0s were pretty unimpressive.
And there were three types of loco called Oban bogie: the Brittain 4-4-0s, the McIntosh 4-6-0s and the Pickersgill 4-6-0s.
I think you're referring to the McIntosh type?

Not that I know of, it has run as 35017 Belgium Marine on one of two occasions as a member owns the nameplates.

Dan makes a good point, this thread has drifted considerably from its title. Time to split the threads perhaps?
