I can't exactly recall the Steam Railway article as being anything more certain than "my cousin's butcher's plumber's neighbour's dog said he thought he might have heard a passing doberman mention he though he might have seen a boiler somewhere in the Midlands" but perhaps I am being unfair. Indeed, the article seemed to be be unsure as whether it was a news report or a request for information - which in the absence of certainty is probably more advisable than spending half a page covering something which has no quoted source or may be rapidly denied when published.......

    hi,
So what does the future of 42859 now look like without the engine having its boiler

Bad news. I believe it was not in great condition but that's not the point.

I guess that depends on the owner, would seem a an even steeper hill to climb now. What a shame.

Now that the boiler has gone, it is perhaps a reasonable assumption that the owner does not intend to attempt restoration of the engine, but perhaps he will try and find a buyer for the 5ft 6inch driving wheels and the 21 x 26 cylinders, rather than sending them to the scapyard as well.
Hopefully of use to somebody? ---( not a cue for another "new-build" saga....)

Hopefully those parts that can be saved will be so, it is a damn shame to lose a Crab but at least we have another two in preservation.... We're entering a time of tough choices and I fear this will be the first of many unrestored ex- Barry locos, down on their luck which will be scrapped.

My guess would be not much.. it's wheels are still "under contention", the tender probably wasn't worth much, even before it got shoved on the floor.

Frames and Cylinders, good only for spares for another Crab.. assuming they are good.
A new build crab is probably an easier bet than a rebuilt one.

IMHO at this point 42859 has joined 48518 in the scrap yard in the sky (as stories suggest 48518s frames too have been disposed of…if true, with or without permission is unclear), now wasn't there a group seeking to partially scrap a 9F in order to make a scrap yard exhibit..oppourtunity missed perhaps ?.. maybe that 9f will be the next one to join them..

Be interesting to know whether the boiler was recovered by the rightful owner and he has decided for whatever reason to dispose of it, or did it get scrapped by whoever swiped the wheels?

I thought it had mostly bar the wheels been recovered to a safe site.

And what did the official say-so come from out of interest?

I'm not sure an inanimate object can rest in peace? Maybe its resting in pieces is more appropriate?

To be fair, if you believe what's printed in the mag about it, it was stated some time ago the boiler was considered beyond repair or words that to effect, so the boiler might well have been binned if restoration was happening, might be bye bye if things like the wheels and frames end up the same though.

But hang on, it was published somewhere that the owner had removed what was left of the engine, to a safe location, it seems that this whole subject has been a load of half truths all the way along, you dont spend money to remove for secure safe keeping an engine, only to decide to cut up the most valuable bit!! so what is the truth??
if this boiler has now gone then the engine is as good as dead, and all the hot air about bits being saved at Selinge and other places was just that hot air. the preservation movement has been badly let down , there were people who might have been able to have saved her.

I was told about this boiler being scrapped about 3 months ago and was very saddened. Its a loco I had dreamed I would one day see double head with a Patriot. If and thats a massive if, anything could happen your talking half a million for the boiler alone. And I cant see people saying lets spend a million pounds on a design that gets you a loco that already has 2 other survivors of the same class. for that money you could over haul quite a few loco's.

Pure speculation, but if this boiler was beyond repair and not much good to the owner, it still had scrap value. Maybe enough to pay for crane hire and haulage fees to remove the other parts from Binbrook to their new location?

Or to contribute towards getting a new boiler made - which I guess would have to be done from the state of the original if it got scrapped.
