What is the distance to Herston works from the nearest point on the railway?

This was discussed in the Swanage thread. There is a small field from the Herstan works to the railway but had the gas main pipe for the town, so will be very expensive to lay track.

Thanks for 5944's update from the 563 Facebook page (edit).
The WHHR were optimistic with the rebuilt 590 getting into service with problems, so can see the 563 team being cautious.

Hopefully the rest of testing and training will go well and a date will be set for a launch
The BR 50s supporters may feel aggregated the Swanage railway might now be also representing the LSWR Victorian/Edwardian era (as well as a 60s 70s era with the DMU and 4TC). Hopefully the Bluebell and Embsy railways will loan some chocolate and salmon pink LSWR coaches for a launch and some rides in October?

Wonder if the 563 will run some Polar Express trains as there may not be much 2023 running time left if the railway closes for part of November (hopefully the carriage shed might progress?).

You can see in this photo by Andrew PM Wright where the brown of the splashers goes to green, hope that helps.

I hadn't realised how frustratingly close it was, just some 400 ft or so

Outside the works earlier today. And at the risk of a little thread drift I have also shown where the works are in relation to the running line from a Google Maps screen dump for @SpudUk Swanage Tyres being visible in the left of the T3 image. upload_2023-9-4_16-7-43.png IMG_2567.JPG

So presumably the plan was for a spur to run through the field behind the unit and join the running line near Herston station?

Wasn't that the path of the original siding?

Close I think but the 1928 map under image 83 of my copy of the Middleton Press Swanage Branch shows the "junction" opposite Aigburth Road.
    Edit
    Tom beat me to it.

Yes, the logical place to allow mainline services to turn their loco's

From where Swanage Dairy is to just left of the Texaco garage, so basically right through the middle of the industrial estate

Trackside magazine is reporting that the 563 group’s next project is the T9. Apparently it will be moving to the Flour Mill for a pre overhaul assessment.

They will do a good job if 563 is anything to go by

Well, 75 years later LSWR T3 makes its first runs as a complete locomotive on LSWR metals. A truly momentous day for all preservationists.

Also seen moving under it's own steam light engine on the 563 Group's Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/SRT563LG/
Further running-in light engine then, if no more 'snagging' required, it will no doubt go onto trial load hauling to see how it copes with the gradients on the branch.
These are up to 1 in 76 for short distances - so not in NYMR or MHR territory before anyone tries to compare and contrast. Still, not bad for an 1893 built 4-4-0 to get stuck into.
No definitive confirmation received yet regarding date(s) of special workings for sponsors, stakeholders and other invited guests.
However, the Railway's website is showing nine days of passenger workings [21st to 29th October]. Bookings link yet to be added to the information page: https://www.swanagerailway.co.uk/events/view/563-returns-to-steam

I assume that the launch day will be postponed from 7th October. Shame if so, but totally understandable.
