    thanks for the pics RSF.

I suppose she will be leaving the park, and going straight to Elgh, for the open day, once the work has been completed?

I'd expect her to be heading straight back to Bomo in the next day or two, should be off the lathe by now. I believe it is planned to send 1497 to Eastleigh 100.

How long does it take for the units wheels to be turned on the lathe?

We've only got a single lathe at Wimbledon (ie can only turn one axle at a time). Each axle takes between an hour and an hour & a half to turn, depends on how bad the damage is (this time includes moving the unit so that axle is in position, setting up, turning x-amount of times, setting down and checking the axle is within spec). Sometimes you need only a skim, but other times 3 or 4 cuts are necessary. If you have bad flats you need to take a couple of small cuts to start with or you'll break the cutting head. Most newer lathes are double-ended (ie turn two axles at the same time). Obviously they'd do the job a lot quicker.

So how has the unit faired? Is she fit to return to normal duties? I think most railways should think about sending locos to Wimbledon for flats to be sorted. Obviously only the ones close to Wimbledon of course.

She is safely back in Bomo 34007, that I am 101 % sure.

My Wife, and I decided to go shopping in Eastleigh today. We arrived at 1142, and before I could get my camera out, the ED + 1498 came thundering through the Down Fast at 1143 am :smt013 :smt013

I was not a happy bunny

I decided to make a weekend of the Eastleigh 100 event, and to stay in Lymington and travel on the 'Flyer' before it's withdrawn. I guess I was too late though.

This can surely only reduce the attraction of Lymington as a tourist resort.

Dont think replacing the heritage units with newer stock will affect the tourist trade in Lymington i travelled a few times on the Heritage stock and was the only enthusiast on there.

South West trains excemption for this line is in place until March 31st at 2359 2013.. they only just got it renewed in January this year.

for the specific six vehicles listed and the specific platforms.

So it may not be over yet.

Although most Lymingtonians like the character of the older trains, there are not many people that travel on the Lymington branch specifically for its heritage units. Maybe a few enthusiasts, but certainly not families looking for an afternoon out.

I don’t think a modern unit would in any way diminish Lymington’s popularity as a tourist destination, which is more an upmarket getaway for rich Londoners and less a traditional bucket-and-spade resort like Swanage. The town seems to be doing alright for itself at the moment, with few empty shops and full hotels.

I was born and bred in Lymington, and my parents still live there.

I understand from a source within SWT that 159008 covered the Lymington branch on Friday afternoon due to both 3CIG units being OOS. The unit was worked by Salisbury crews with Bournemouth pilotmen.

Some Bournemouth drivers are to be trained on 158/159 units.

    Regards, Neil
