    Some of us care!

One day we will wake up and realise that we have let everthing go and have s-d all left ty remind us of our maritime history.

How very sad. Manxman deserves better.

You know it - I know it - the same applies to the TSS Queen Mary - but the museumprofession is currentlyrun by bean counters, not curators :smt022

    Evening All,

I have only just come across this thread and, quite by chance, I found a picture of the T.S.S. MANXMAN amongst a collection of, mostly, railway slides that I am scanning to put on the Internet. So I scanned the MANXMAN slide and it is now on my Fotopic site :

    http://ronfisher.fotopic.net/p57756352.html

There may be another one; if there is, I'll put that on too.

    Hello again,

Further to my message of Friday, I have, indeed found another picture of the MANXMAN and this is now on my Fotopic site together with some pictures of the MANX MAID (III) and BEN-MY-CHREE (V). If anyone is interested to have a look, here's the link :

    http://ronfisher.fotopic.net/c1099919.html

As usual, this is the 'Stop Press!' collection for new pictures. In due course I shall move them to the 'General Views' collection and they will then be here :

Hope that they are of interest.

I trawled the net for more info Stan - but nothing seems to have moved. The price of scrap Vs cost of asbestos removal seems to be the only thing saving her now. As the BBC pointed out some time ago, a big money backer is needed; it appears none are forthcoming.

With Peel Holdings' plans for Liverpool North Docks set back by at least 5 years surely a temporary home for 'Manxman' could now be negotiated.

Its still all down to money though Bob - isn't it?

What happened to the Liverpool Echo's 'buy a rivet for a pound' appeal ?

Peel Holdings are the antithesis of any heritage operation.

They point blank refused the Manxman a home and in so doing shot down the entire project

The warships have had to leave and the U Boat be cut into three pieces so that more tributes to mammon could be built on the dock estate

Of course - if its heritage you want you could always go to the Trafford Centre and marvel at Mr Whittaker's mum's old Mercedes - that's about how much community consciousness Peel have!

As for passenger operation out of Pier Head - don't get me started!

    Frank,

Have you tried asking Mersey Ferries if you can use one of their stages ? Just keep an eye on your ships though, as they have a habit of sectioning ships to show them off.

The Mersey Dock and Harbour Board that control all shipping movements on the Mersey, berthing, etc was bought out by Peel Holdings too - hence the Legoland buildings appearing all over the docks.

The Manx stage has been reconstructed so that it is usable only by their own craft which have high level gangways and link spans - no complaint - they aren't responsible to us.

The Mersey Ferry pontoon at Pier Head is unavailable so its either Seacombe or the Cruise Stage - the most famous maritime city in the UK can't take the country's heritage ships - you couldn't write it could you???

    Money and politicians..............

Is there any further news on the Manxman, it really is tragic that she has survived so long since withdrawl in 1982 and gone through this long lingering decline. Once again it goes to illustrate the abject failure that we have in this country in preserving anything maritime, she really was the last of a long line, its a shame that when she was sold out of service in Sept '82 that the bid at the time from liverpool council fell short of the offer by Marda- how different things might have been?

Lets not give up hope on her yet, at least she still survives and Pallion are in no rush to destroy her.

Something needs to be done though, she is so unique and special.

There is nothing "official" happening anywhere now - but there have been some very interesting articles by explorers - check the AIS Manxman thread
