Was Wantage Tramway No. 5 ever a GWR loco?

Bought by the GWR on closure of the Tramway in '46, as I recall, but I doubt whether she ever steamed in Western ownership and by '48 she'd been plinthed. She was however an LNWR engine at one point, serving on the Cromford & High Peak and at Crewe Works.

purchased and plinthed at Wantage Rd due to someone recognising her History. Never used by the GWR other than illicit use in retrieving slip coaches which had overshot so I once read.

That would have been when the loco was still under Wantage Tramway ownership though?

Indeed. It was used illicitly by GWR employees whilst still in use and owned by Wantage Tramway. Sorry I should have been clearer.

Come to think of it on the GWR pre-Grouping survivors list there's also the remains of the Oxford, Worcester and Wolverhampton Railway 0-6-0 at Armley Mills.
