So it's OK for all the mighty keyboard warriors on this forum to maintain their anonymity (yourself and a very few others excepted) while they snipe away, but for some reason the identity of someone else has to be made public?

Sorry but you chose to post about "mysterious Mr. X" and no-one else. If you did not wish people to ask (not unreasonably) "well, just who is he?" then the post should not have been made.

I think that the problem is now that a seed of doubt has been sown about what was previously seen as an easy target for the usual slagging.

Well, it would help if you extrapolated on your post and actually came out and said who/what/where/when instead of keeping a cloak of secrecy over a persons identity, as PH said, please do tell - it would help to quell the flames of doubt being raised.................................... and may even garner support from the many doubters on here (and no doubt elsewhere) knowing that this project is a serious proposal with the necessary expertise behind it, and not just a"pie in the sky" scheme, unlike most of those in the past whose seeds are sown on face ache.........................

So Mr Dragon, are you going to tell us or not?.......................................................

Given the turn of the debate, Martin felt it relevant to point out that at least one person involved with a project had exactly the sort of experience that other posters were demanding. I can quite understand if Martin doesn't feel it is his place to name that person publicly, especially given the scorn and ridicule poured on many such projects and those proposing on here. Indeed, there are some posters who only ever seem to post to belittle new proposals in non-constructive manner.

When a long standing Forum member states something but is understandably not in a position to give further details, I feel that should be respected rather than in effect calling the poster a potential liar if they won't reveal a name.

"Outing" people in forums is appallingly bad manners. It would be utterly wrong for Mr Perry to name a name.

whilst i would love to see an L class new build, i fear that it wont be built, mension a long lost class of engine, you attract the dreamers of the preservation world, who think they can achieve the impossible, it dont matter how long they have been in preservation for, an old dreamer is no different to a young one, the only difference is that people tend not to lambast people who are longstanding members of the movement.
how many schemes to save this or that line, that have no commercial chance of sucess? or new build locomotives, or schemes to restore come up each year? all at a time when established railways and museums are struggling to find people to help them?

Well, it would have helped if he had said " I know, but have been asked not to say" or something similar, which I'm sure the majority of just would understand and respect until such time as things came out in the public domain.

Maybe it would have been for the best yo have said nothing instead of dangling a carrot.............................. sometimes silence is golden. in which case this thread would have died a natural death instead of rising like a Phoenix.......................................

I don't want anybody "outed". Neither do I want to carry on any vendetta against any particular person However if someone wishes to pray someone in aid in support of their argument they need to be identified. If they won't do so, it becomes a pretty useless prayer!

As I said, it would have been better had "mysterious Mr. X" never been mentioned.

Perhaps "Mr X" could be asked if it was Ok for his/her identity to be revealed by Saggin dragon? It's fair enough bot naming without permission, but perhaps permission could be sought?

Actually, I think name is rather irrelevant. Far more important is CV. So if someone said "someone behind this project was the treasurer of a group that restored a Barry wreck" or "someone behind this group is called Fred Bloggs", actually the former is far more informative. For example, I don't especially try to hide my identity, and I suspect most Bluebell volunteers on here probably have an idea of who I am. But for people on other railways, I'd hope that people respect or not my contributions based on a view of what I say, rather than specifically what my name is. After all, I don't personally know many volunteers on other railways, or even what they are called, beyond what I see here, so why is it important that what I am reading is from Fred Bloggs - I'd pay more attention to a contribution from a pseudonymous poster but one whose views, through long experience, I happen to respect.

That's not an excuse to post scurrilous or malicious content from behind a pseudonym - but that is clearly not the case here.

As for the L1, if Martin / Saggin' Dragon is right and there is a figure with good preservation experience behind this project, that clearly changes, albeit in a small way, the credibility of this project. So I think it is germane to mention it, even if the person concerned doesn't at this stage wish to be identified. If the project goes further, it would be important to flesh out the CV to help build further credibility, but that is for the project members to do themselves, not second-hand by supposition and rumour.
