Gone way off topic for one thing. A lot of gibberish I can't get my head round. 550 people probably looking or browsing out of interest & probably won't come back.

Speaking for myself, I frequently visit this thread in the hope of gleaning further information on 31806's progress. Apprenticeships on heritage railways is an in-depth issue that is vastly beyond the scope of this thread, and so I respectfully recommend that a new thread specifically related to this is started in the "Heritage Railways and Centres" section.

I agree with this sentiment and the comments made by others. There is a thread running, since yesterday or the day before. So those who wish to debate "training" and the future regarding techical ability please move to this other thread. For those who struggle to navigate, search (engineering) in the search box top right, and then click on to select " recruiting drive for five mechanical engineering apprentices" the debate will hopefully transfer, it doesn't need to be only about MHR it involves everyone.

For those interested in modifications on standards, and other designs, which have been debated, on this thread I will start a new thread "Engineering modified Standard designs" as there seemed to be a few of us who are interested in this topic. I have learnt a lot of background from the discussion, thank you for those who had input.

    Best Regards The Engineer

73096 was over the pit outside the wheeldrop shed at Ropley yesterday having her boiler filled with water so hopefully not long for the boiler tests and a return to steam!

I see today she was over the pit again and having her tender filled with water.

I gather from earlier in this thread that the smokebox area and cylinder will be re-painted now (for obvious reasons) and that a full repaint will take place in the autumn when the traffic requirements are lower, but the comment on that pic suggests that she is to be painted in BR black, is this hearsay or fact? I must admit, I do prefer them in black.

I think I will have to come up with something else Bryan as Black five is already taken! Don't know what to use yet though. Da*n! I will have to change my avatar too!

It was black some time ago, in the 80's I think, when it was running as 73080 "Merlin".

Don’t forget this is the last month that 5224 will be in service before her boiler ticket runs out.

Which I guess is the reason that 73096 is being rushed into traffic only half painted.

    Thanks bristolian.

With 5224 out on the freight train today left some space in Ropley yard to photograph 73096. Can't be to long before we see her storming up Medstead bank again.

]Looking forward to 73096s return to service and running as a loco thats just had some light works attention (excluding a new cylinder !! ) with a bit of new paint just like it used to be in the early 60s.
Many locos emerged from works looking just like this it wasnt always a full repaint.
Also attatched is a picture from Sundays Goods working with 5224.

I understand that the Stanier black 5 has also been in steam.
