Smoke was seen coming from the black 5 on saturday.I do not know how much of a fire was in the firebox.I had intended to take a picture of the loco but it was moved back into the wheel drop later in the day.

how long before someone says " go and light up the five" and someone gets the wrong 5 lit up? or has it already happened?

seriously though it shouldnt be long before both 5's are in traffic, is 73096 going to be lined out, it might be good to see her left in unlined plain black for a week end and yes she did run as 73080 in black

Oily rag in the firebox? Spontaneous combustion.. The possibilities are endless.

Further to this, Chris Churm said this in front of a number of people in the Medstead mess room yesterday.

Today, 73096 was seen to make its first moves under its own power since the LH cylinder failed so catastrophically. Congratulations and well done to all concerned.

Great news, lets hope 73096 can see out the rest of her ticket with no more unfortunate luck. Well done to everyone involved and roll on 45379 and 31806.

Time on the video is 2.15 minutes and it does look very much like a Black 5 with smoke coming from the chimney. Anyone want to modify their post?

No doubt about it! That's the Black 5, not the BR Std 5.

(BTW Adrian - are you related to Dorothy? That is her quote in your signiture, isn't it?)

If I were a lawyer and/or a pedant I would have to say "case not proven!". Yes there was smoke issuing from the chimney, but was the engine in steam!?

There's no smoke without fire.. but there can be no steam with smoke. Confusing isn't it?
No I am not related to Dorothy, the quote came from a friend who thought it fitted..

Hi, I'm a newcomer to these pages.

Spent yesterday 14 July at Ropley in Wednesday Gang.

60019 Bittern together with water carrier and support coach departed to pastures new
    92212 9F on service train
73096 on first revenue-earning run for 15 months - a Footplate Experience duty. It looked great (I'm relieved that nothing I'd put on had fallen off!).

    Work was in progress on
    31806(U)
    45379 (Black5)
76017 (Std 4 2-6-0) dismantled frame stretchers, brake rigging and bushes

See www.watercressline.co.uk for report and pictures
